DIANNE'S POV The day had started like any other, but as I walked toward the library, something felt wrong. The air was heavy, like something bad was about to happen. Hugging my books close, I tried to shake off the fear. Ever since I met Derek, my world has been turned upside down in an unusual kind of way. I was always looking over my shoulders and not to mention that Irene threatened me a couple of days ago. I was almost at the library steps when Amanda and her friends blocked my way. My stomach sank. Their smiles looked off, their eyes empty, like they weren’t really themselves. “Dianne, where do you think you’re going?” Amanda sneered. Her voice made my skin crawl. I’d faced her bullying before, but today felt different. Worse. “I-I have to get to class,” I whispered, trying to walk around her. Jenna moved to block me, her sharp nails catching the light. “You’re not going anywhere,” Jenna said. She shoved me, and I stumbled back, dropping my books. They scattered across the ground, but I didn’t have time to pick them up. Amanda grabbed my arm, her nails biting into my skin. Pain flared, and I winced, trying to pull away, but she held on tighter. Her nails scratched deep, and blood trickled down my arm, warm and sticky. “Oh, look at that,” Amanda said, pretending to feel sorry. “The little bookworm’s bleeding.” Blood dripped onto the ground, and I fought back tears. My heart raced, panic making it hard to breathe. I could see it now: Amanda’s eyes looked strange, like she wasn’t in control of what she was doing. I wanted to yell, shout for help but I know that would only make it difficult. Jenna shoved me again, and I fell, scraping my knees. I wanted to scream, but I bit my lip to keep from crying. I couldn’t show them how scared I was. “Amanda, please,” I begged, my voice shaking. “Let me go.” But she didn’t listen. Her grip tightened, twisting my arm painfully. Blood kept dripping, and tears blurred my vision. Vicky and another girl, Jenna, stood beside Amanda, looking blank and empty, like puppets. Then I saw her: Irene. She was leaning against a tree, watching. Her eyes lit up with amusement, and she looked pleased with my pain. Irene’s smile was cruel, and I realized she was enjoying every second of this. Worse, she seemed to be the one controlling Amanda and the others. I remembered Derek's words,He had asked me to stay way from her. I had tried my best but it was more like I was caught up in a fight between two lovers. Our eyes met, and Irene raised an eyebrow, like she was daring me to fight back. I tried to push Amanda away, but she was too strong. The more I struggled, the more it hurt. “Please, stop,” I whispered, my voice cracking. But Irene only laughed. “Oh, Dianne,” Irene mocked, sounding amused. “Don’t ruin the fun.” Amanda shoved me harder, and I hit the ground, my head smacking the pavement. Pain exploded in my skull, and for a second, I thought I might pass out. Blood trickled from a cut on my forehead, mixing with the tears that finally escaped. The sound of their laughter echoed around me, cruel and harsh. Suddenly, a strong wind blew through the courtyard. The laughter stopped, and I felt something change, like a new, powerful presence had arrived. My heart thumped wildly as I forced myself to open my eyes. And then I saw him. Derek. He was standing at the edge of the courtyard, his eyes locked on Irene. He looked different—angry, dangerous. The air around him seemed to buzz with energy, and he didn’t look like the calm, quiet Derek I knew. I looked at his face, they were white and cold, like it was devoid of any human feelings or emotions. Irene’s smile faltered for a second. “Well, well,” she said, trying to sound confident. “Look who showed up.” Derek’s eyes softened when he looked at me, but when he turned back to Irene, they hardened again. He stepped forward, and suddenly, he blurred, moving faster than anyone could see. Shadows seemed to dance around him, and I realized he wasn’t human. Amanda and her friends froze, their eyes wide with fear. Whatever control Irene had over them was breaking, and they started to look confused and scared. “Let her go,” Derek commanded, his voice deep and angry. " You forgot the word, please." Irene taunted. " This isn't your fight,Derek. You can be on your way." Amanda looked back with an eye that showed no human emotions. Amanda’s grip on my arm went slack, and I pulled myself away, my whole body shaking. Blood dripped from my wounds, but I barely felt the pain. All I could do was stare at Derek, terrified but unable to look away. Derek’s eyes glowed red, and his fangs gleamed. He looked like something out of a nightmare, a predator ready to strike. Irene’s smile wavered, but she tried to stay calm. “What’s wrong, Derek?” she taunted. “Scared I’ll hurt your little human?” Derek didn’t answer. He vanished, moving so quickly that he was suddenly right in front of Amanda. The other students screamed, backing away, and Derek’s vampire form loomed over them, protective but terrifying. I barely saw any movement. it was more of a blur than an actual movement. I froze or should I have said the time froze. What just happened? Did I see wrongly or was that even possible? I held my breath, the world around me still and silent as I waited to see what happened next. My blood dripping to the floor with each thud echoing loudly in my ears. I held my breath as I watched what unfold next.
