The restructuring turned out to be even harder than I'd expected. The moment my dad raised the proposal at a board meeting, Uncle Vincent was the first to object. "Marcus, what are you doing? Ashford Group belongs to the Ashford family. Why should we let outsiders come in and tell us how to run it?" Uncle Damien immediately backed him up. "Exactly. Independent directors and external oversight officers are all window dressing. Once you start dividing authority, no one will be able to get anything done." Several other shareholders with family ties to the Ashford family quickly joined in. While the entire room argued, I sat quietly in the corner peeling an orange.
