Chapter 4: Bound by Blood

855 Words
The next few days passed in a blur of whispered rumors and haunted stares. Lyla felt them. Everywhere. Eyes watching her in the halls. In the woods. Even when she slept. Riven kept his distance — physically — but she could feel him. The mark on her wrist glowed faintly whenever he was near. And sometimes when he wasn’t. What had he awakened inside her? And why did she miss his voice, even when she knew she shouldn’t? She stood in the forest clearing again, arms wrapped tightly around herself. The same place they met. The same place he first told her the truth. "You're early." She turned, startled. Riven stepped out from the shadows, hands in his jacket pockets, golden eyes studying her carefully. “You always sneak up on people like that?” she muttered. “You always show up when you're not supposed to?” Their eyes locked. Something cracked between them again — invisible, electric. The wind stilled. Lyla looked away first. “I couldn’t sleep. Again.” “Because of Kael?” “Because of everything,” she admitted. “The mark. The dreams. You.” Riven’s jaw tightened. “I’m sorry.” “Don’t apologize. Just tell me what’s happening to me.” He hesitated… then nodded once. “Come with me.” They walked deeper into the woods until the trees parted into a hidden stone path, overgrown with moss and roots. He led her to a hollowed cave carved with ancient symbols — glowing faintly in the dark. She gasped. "These symbols… I've seen them in my dreams." “I thought you might,” he said. “They’re from the old tongue,” he added, running his fingers over one of the carvings. “Language of the First Wolves.” She shivered. “What do they say?” He paused. Then quietly: “The Silver Flame shall awaken when the moon bleeds. Her blood shall bind, or burn, the Alpha King.” Lyla blinked. “What does that mean?” He looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time. “It means… you’re more than just a girl with a mate mark, Lyla.” “You think I’m the Silver Flame?” “I know you are.” The cave seemed to darken around them. “You’re saying I’m in some ancient prophecy?” she said bitterly. “That I’m supposed to choose between saving or destroying… what, your kind?” “Our kind,” he corrected. “I’m not like you.” “Your blood says otherwise.” She shook her head. “This is too much.” “You think I wanted this?” he said, voice rougher now. “You think I wanted a mate I couldn’t touch without fearing I'd lose control? That fate would tie me to the one person destined to destroy everything I swore to protect?” Lyla’s breath caught. He stepped closer — one slow, aching step at a time — until they were chest to chest, and she could feel the heat radiating off his body. "You think I haven't dreamed of kissing you every night since the mark appeared?" Her lips parted. His hand came up — slowly — to brush her cheek. "But if I kiss you… if I give in… I don’t know if I’ll stop." Her voice trembled. “Then don’t stop.” A growl escaped him — soft, animal, broken. He leaned in. Their lips were almost touching— Then a c***k echoed in the distance. Both of them froze. Riven turned, body tense, nose flaring. “Run,” he said. Lyla didn’t argue. They sprinted through the woods, her heartbeat thundering in her ears. She could feel something behind them. Hunting. Closing in. Not Kael. Worse. They broke into a clearing — and suddenly Riven stopped, arm outstretched. A second later, a figure stepped out of the trees. Female. Tall. Wild red hair. Eyes glowing bright silver. “Brother,” the woman said. “You didn’t tell me your little Flame was this pretty.” Riven growled. “Back off, Sylra.” “She needs to come with me,” Sylra said, voice like ice. “The Council wants her protected.” “She’s under my protection.” “Then you should have told them she’d been marked,” Sylra snapped. “You know what this means, Riven. She’s not just your mate — she’s the key to the Blood Pact.” Lyla’s pulse raced. “What’s the Blood Pact?” Both siblings turned to her. Riven’s voice dropped. “It’s the ancient agreement that kept humans and wolves from tearing each other apart. It only holds as long as the Flame remains unclaimed.” “And now,” Sylra said with a slow smile, “you’ve claimed her.” Lyla’s entire world shifted. "You mean… the entire supernatural world is going to war because of me?" “No,” Sylra said. “They’ll go to war over him.” Her eyes flicked to Riven. “The Alpha who fell for the Flame.” [End of Chapter 4]
