256 Words
Board meeting in 1 hour. Ana was sitting in her car. Praying. Shaking. Tap tap tap. Mrs. Bennett. 70 years old. Widow. Choir member for 40 years. She opened the passenger door and sat down. No words. Just presence. “Ana,” she said finally. “I heard about the board.” Ana nodded. Couldn’t speak. Mrs. Bennett pulled something from her purse. An old photo. Young woman. Early 20s. Same eyes as Mrs. Bennett. Holding a baby. “My daughter,” Mrs. Bennett whispered. “Her name was Claire. She had postpartum depression. Cedar Falls River.” The parking lot went silent. “I found her journal,” Mrs. Bennett continued. “Last page said: ‘Nobody sees me. Nobody stays.’” Tears fell on the photo. “That’s why I knocked on your door at 2am, Ana. That’s why I said ‘You are too loved to die.’ Because nobody said it to Claire.” Ana reached out. Held Mrs. Bennett’s hand. “I’m so sorry,” Ana whispered. “Don’t be,” Mrs. Bennett said. “Be like me now. Stay. For the Mayas. For the Lilys. For the Roberts.” She opened the car door. “Board meeting, dear. Let’s go fight for them.” Ana got out. Legs shaking. But she wasn’t alone anymore. Two women. Walking into Grace Community. One secret. One mission: Nobody dies alone.`;
