After running for so long, exhaustion finally caught up to her, and she drifted into a deep sleep inside the tent.
The next morning, she awoke, feeling a warmth around her—his arms. Her eyes flew open, and she gasped, startled.
“Oh! Who… who are you?”
"Ah, I suppose I haven't formally introduced myself," came a calm, familiar voice. "I'm Alex. You were injured yesterday, nearly passed out right here. I brought you in. You should be thanking me, really." He flashed a playful smile.
"Why... why am I in your arms?" she asked, her voice trembling with confusion.
“What’s wrong? Not happy about it?” he asked with a mischievous grin. Seeing her startled expression, he added, “Relax. My tent was the only one with space, and besides… don’t you remember what you did last night?”
Her mind reeled. What did I do? She thought back, her memory swimming with vague, unsettling possibilities. Did I turn into a wolf again? Did I almost kill him? Her breath caught. Does he know who I am now? But then, she frowned. If he knew, surely he’d be afraid of her. So why would he pull her into his arms like that?
Alex watched her, clearly amused as she struggled to piece it together. “You’re really adorable when you’re flustered, you know that?” he teased, a smirk curling up the corner of his mouth.
She frowned, still bewildered. "So, what exactly happened last night?"
“Nothing, really,” he replied, his tone casual as he stood and gestured for her to follow him outside. “Come on, you’ll want to see this.”
They stepped out of the tent into the fresh morning air, where dawn was painting the sky in soft shades of pink and orange. She took in a deep breath, feeling a quiet awe at the beauty of the world just waking up around them.
“Are you here just to travel?” she asked, curious about him now that the initial shock had worn off.
“Sort of,” he replied. “I’m working on a project and needed to be out here for research.”
“A project?” She tilted her head, trying to understand. “What’s that, exactly?”
“It’s… when you gather a group of people to accomplish something meaningful,” he explained. His gaze drifted from the landscape to meet her eyes, the intensity in his expression catching her off guard.
“Anything can be accomplished?” she asked, feeling the weight of his words.
He turned, meeting her gaze with a look of unshakable determination.
“As long as you believe it can be done, then yes. Anything.”His eyes were intense, like twin torches burning with purpose. For a moment, she was reminded of her father, who had possessed the same unbreakable gaze.
She couldn’t help but wonder, Is it possible to form a 'pack' among humans? She whispered the thought to herself, unsure if she meant it aloud. Or maybe it’s not a 'pack'—maybe it’s a family... or something else entirely...
Alex’s words lingered in her mind, and as she watched him, she realized he wasn’t just trying to help her survive.
