Chapter Twenty
The next day Sarah woke up and prepared for work. She didn't let her kids go to school.
As she stepped into the company staff were whispering, and all eyes seemed to be at her.
She ignored all of them and walked ahead.
Miss Irish you're welcome, Jane the Reeds designer told her and please Mrs Reed has been waiting for you
Sarah froze, for a second. Then asked
“Which of the Mrs Reed?” because of it was Emma she is not ready for her trouble this morning
“Oh that would be Nathan's Mother.” Jane
replied with a fake smile
“Okay let's go.” She kept wondering why she came to see her.
“Hello, Mrs. Reed.” Sarah greeted politely
Mrs Reed withdrew her scrutinizing gaze, stood up and approached her. “In two weeks I will be celebrating my forty-fifth birthday. I heard that the Reeds cooperative now has an international chief designer. And I was hoping you could design a dress for me. Would you be willing to do that for me Ms Irish or Sarah?”
Sarah observed that somewhat overbearing demeanor woman in front of her, unsure if she was her to cause trouble or genuinely wanted a design. After a moment of thought Sarah replied “With just two weeks it might be a bit too rushed to go from a design to finished product. Surely Mrs Reed you must have already had someone design something…”
Before she could finish. Mrs Reed interrupted her rasing her voice with a sharp tone “What? Ms Irish do you think someone of my status isn't worthy of your design?”
Sarah frowned slightly this woman clearly wasn't here with good intentions but since she was on her turf she wouldn't want to create a conflict “ Not at all, it would be an honour to design for you Mrs Reed, I was trying to say that the design process might be a bit slow, and I fear it could delay your birthday celebration.” Sarah replied courteously
A hint of disdain flashed in Mrs Reed's eyes she had seen many people like Sarah who flatter her. With a cold snort she said. “Let's set a deadline of three days if I like the design we will proceed to make the gown. And the timing should work out perfectly.
Sarah was about to refuse when Mrs Reed pulled out a check from her bag and placed it on the table “ Don't worry you won't be designing it for free, here's a check of a million for deposit. I will come for the design in three days and pay the balance. Which will definitely not be below your market rate.
This was like being pushed behind a corner, leaving Sarah with no room for refuse.
Mrs Reed walked away leaving behind a group of people whispering among themselves.
“Mrs Reed birthday dresses where always made by Jane before who would have thought that Ms Irish would catch her eyes quickly.”
“Well of course she did Jane is talented but she's not a match for an international fashion chief.”
There where more whispers Sarah ignored them all.
Great Sarah thought, just two days of working at the Reeds cooperative she already made enemies.
But designing a birthday dress in three days is a real headache. Designing a gown was usually a real complex task, it required a good innovation idea that didn't resemble the previous design.
Three days seems hardly enough to create a decent dress. And judging by Mrs Reed's attitude today if she couldn't deliver she would be in even a bigger problem.
At noon Sophie called Ann to come over to her office for some discussions. Sarah dragged herself to her friends office.
Sophie smiled when she saw her, and also noticed the look on her face. “Oh baby girl being angry doesn't look good on you.” so tell me what did that Woman came to do.
“Yeah” She literally came for me to make her birthday dress that's is coming up in two weeks time, I don't really want to do this, Sophie, “that Woman clearly came for trouble, before I could reject her she brought out a check of one million for deposit and walked out giving me three days to Skeche it can you really imagine.”
You can do this okay. “Remember the gown you designed four years back? it was a sensation back then.
With Sophie reminder she recalled the gown, it was the gown she won a good award for. The right hand always remained with her and she never sold it.
“Is it doable?” she asked frowning
“Of course. you designed that dress just tweak it a bit and use it for now.” Sophie shrugged
