The contract loophole

1070 Words
No successful business comes without a loophole and Mrs Willam’s had just discovered hers. The contract between the Williams and the Davies families, written by Sara’s grandfather, stated a “Williams” and a “Davies” but it never specified which of the Williams' daughters. That single oversight was enough. “This solution will work,” Mrs. Williams said quickly, as if speaking faster could make it unquestionable. Then, before anyone could react, she turned slightly toward the room and spoke aloud. “We have another daughter… Sienna Williams. She will take Sara’s place,” she announced. Silence swallowed the room, every head turned toward Sienna. She felt it instantly, eyes stripping her down, measuring her like she was a replacement item pulled from storage. The overlooked daughter had suddenly become the only option left standing. Mr Davies broke the silence first. After a brief pause, he agreed with a sigh that sounded more like relief than concern. Sienna felt something crack inside her chest. No one asked her. Not even once. Her entire future had just been decided in a single sentence. Sara had been prepared for this marriage her whole life, Groomed for it, trained for it. Sienna was just… the backup. Mrs Williams immediately instructed the chaos to move faster. The Davies family gave them just fifteen minutes. The guests had to be “distracted.” Mr Davies returned to the hall with a practiced smile. “Apologies for the slight delay,” he announced smoothly. “The bride will be joining us shortly.” A wave of murmurs spread through the hall. Some guests leaned in, whispering behind expensive perfumes and raised eyebrows. A few chuckled, unconvinced. “He’s just saving face,” someone muttered. Others looked toward the exits, already losing patience. Mr Davies signaled for refreshments.“Keep them entertained,” he ordered softly. Servers moved quickly through the hall with trays of champagne and hors d’oeuvres, smoothing over the growing tension like it was part of the plan. He stepped toward his son.“It will be fine,” he said. But Ryan didn’t respond, He didn’t even look reassured, he just wanted this wedding to be over. In the dressing room, chaos unfolded. Makeup artists rushed back in like soldiers returning to a battlefield. Fabrics were adjusted, and jewelry fastened. Breathless instructions were exchanged in low voices. Then Mrs Williams entered, not with comfort but with control. “Sienna Williams,” she said sharply, “I know this wasn’t the plan. Sara was meant to marry into the Davies family. But your sister absconded, as you know, and you will take her place.” Sienna stood still. Mrs Williams continued, voice tightening. “I know we haven’t treated you fairly. But your performance today determines everything. If you fail, your father loses his company. We all end up with nothing.” A pause. “Davies' share in our company is over sixty percent. That’s because of your father’s gambling debts.” Sienna’s gaze lowered slightly, why should she be the one to take up that burden, she never told Sara to leave or her father to gamble, yet she was the one receiving the repercussions of their bad decisions. She was so sure that if it were the other way around, her parents would have given Sara a choice. “And Sara,” her mother added bitterly, “is now a disowned child. I can’t believe she ran away without a word. If she had a problem, she should have spoken to me. Instead, she chose cowardice.” Her eyes sharpened. “Don’t disappoint me, Sienna. Or I will disown you too.”Sienna nodded, quietly. She might not agree with her parents but she never voiced her opposition cause she always wished they could love her like Sara. Minutes later, she was dressed. The gown meant for Sara slid onto her body too perfectly. Even she noticed it, how the fabric clung differently, how her fuller curves filled it in a way Sara never would have. She stared at the mirror, for a second, she didn’t recognize herself. A bride, not her sister’s shadow anymore. Just… a bride. The doors opened. Her father escorted her down the aisle. The hall was massive, luxury dripping from every corner. Chandeliers, designer suits, guests who looked like they belonged on magazine covers. It was not just a wedding. It was a transaction disguised as a celebration. Sienna kept her veil down. Eyes followed her immediately, Whispers started again. “Is that Sara Williams?” “No… that doesn’t look like her.” “She’s different…” Sienna felt her hands tremble. Her father’s grip tightened, not as comfort, but as a silent warning, keep walking he communicated without actually talking. She steadied herself and continued forward. Her steps were steady, but inside her chest, everything was shaking. When she got closer, the murmurs sharpened. “Looks like Sara ran away,” someone whispered loudly. “So they brought a substitute.” A few soft giggles followed, but Sienna didn’t react. She had been warned not to. Finally, she reached him. Ryan. He noticed immediately that this wasn’t Sara. That much was obvious. But something about her… pulled his attention in a way he didn’t expect. Familiar, yet different. His eyes drifted lower before he caught himself. Curves, Natural, Unapologetic. Nothing like Sara’s carefully sculpted image. The priest continued, unaware of the energy shift, guiding them through the vows. Sienna spoke when told, and Ryan barely listened. His mind was elsewhere, trying to figure out where he knew this woman from, he wouldn't wait long,it was time for the couple to share their first kiss. “The groom may now lift the veil.” Silence thickened, and Ryan reached forward slowly and lifted it. And then— A smirk formed on his face, Slow, Controlled. Now this was what he called a twist. He flicked a glance toward his father, that old man is still sly even in his advanced age, he never fails to surprise him. He had known, and he hadn’t said a word. A low chuckle almost escaped him. As the veil came off completely, the hall erupted: gasps, shock, Shock, Confusion. People leaned forward instantly. “Wait… that’s not sara” And in that instant, the wedding stopped being a ceremony. It became something no one in that room was prepared for.
