Chapter Two: Shadows That Move

341 Words
The cabin was quiet. Too quiet. Carla paced the living room, flashlight in hand. Every time the beam swept over the walls, the shadows seemed to twitch—like they were watching, waiting. She tried to tell herself it was just her imagination, but the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. “Carla… did you hear that?” Sam’s voice trembled. “Probably just the wind,” Carla said, though her voice sounded hollow even to her. Jay laughed nervously. “Yeah, the wind in a forest that’s been here a hundred years. Sure.” They tried to settle in, but then it started: soft whispers. Almost like someone was standing right behind them, breathing in their ears. “Who’s there?” Lena called, her voice shaking. No answer. Just whispers, almost mocking. Then the lights flickered. And the fireplace, cold just moments ago, burst into flames—green, flickering violently, casting long, twisted shadows across the room. Something moved in those shadows. Carla’s flashlight caught it: a shape, crouched low, darker than the darkness around it, with eyes that glowed like coals. It wasn’t human. It wasn’t animal. It wasn’t anything she had seen before. “Run!” Jay shouted. But the door slammed shut before anyone could move. A loud, hollow thud echoed through the cabin, rattling the walls. The whispers became voices. “Leave… now…” Carla tried the windows. Locked. The front door? Locked. Every exit was gone. The thing in the shadows stepped forward, gliding, never making a sound. Sam screamed. Lena grabbed her, but even together, they couldn’t escape the feeling of being hunted. Carla’s flashlight flickered and died. Total darkness. Then she felt it—a hand? Or something brushing past her hair. A whisper directly into her ear: “You shouldn’t have come here, Carla…” Her blood ran cold. A sudden crash from upstairs made them all jump. Footsteps—running, stomping, but no one was there. The thing was inside the house. And it was learning them.
