Chapter 4

Klaus’s POV I was already experiencing headaches from the evening. Noah advised me to wait because there was still a regular stream of pack members coming up the path. When I welcomed the main group, who had already arrived by seven, I should have waited. "That's on them if they couldn't be here by the time it started." I growled as I marched off in the direction of the people I was supposed to be 'entertaining' for the evening. I should meet with them as soon as possible to see if any of them are my soul mates. In all honesty, I had already detected my mate's scent. in fact, this morning. How many to one? In an effort to release some of my pent-up rage, I began running in the forest outside the compound. I was racing in circles with no apparent destination in sight. And as I was doing one of my circuits around the forest, I just so happened to smell something strange. I noticed something that wasn't there when I first started.Wherever the aroma was strongest among the trees, I followed it. She had been sprinting through the trees with me, whoever she might have been. The aroma was seductive. My wolf was on edge as a result of it, and I almost lost control of him as a result. She smelled like warm apples, vanilla, and some kind of spice, whatever she was. It smelled like apple pie and was combined with the wind's aroma shortly before a thunderstorm. Her aroma had the tiniest hint of ozone and rain kind of spice, whatever she was. It smelled like apple pie and was combined with the wind's aroma shortly before a thunderstorm. Her aroma had the tiniest hint of ozone and rain. She had a warm, inviting, and enticing scent. I had to track her down. The track led out of the trees and back to the road, so I followed it once again. Old trails led toward town, but the compound's backward-facing smell was the most fragrant. I continued to follow despite the fact that it was more challenging due to the mix of all the other wolves. My arrival at the compound's upper area indicated that her family was of high social standing. That would make the elders happy. I had no concerns. I didn't desire a mate; my wolf, however, was obviously in need of one. They would make me stand down and give my pack to my cousin Caleb if I didn't find one quickly. We'd be destroyed quickly if that weak fool tried to run the pack. No, I was searching for this girl because I had to, not because I wanted to. It made little difference that I was currently rushing around on four feet rather than two and that the fragrance of her was already tightening everything in my body. No, to put it simply, I required this, mate."Alpha." As I neared the location where the aroma was greatest, I heard someone shout out to me where my friend resided. "There's a problem." I could hear my Beta beckoning to me. He would be receiving an earful when we returned to my office, damn him. I turned with a growl and sprinted back to my cabin in the woods.I was now stalking the gathering of women who were dressed scantily. They all appeared to be of the same type that I was accustomed to seeing. They served only as an effective diversion. For one night, it let me forget about something, but it never warmed my bed again.Never have I had more than one sleepover with the same woman. I've never found any of them worthwhile enough to return to. They were only interested in my money, my power, and my prestige. They only ever desired what they could obtain from me, never who I truly was.The group was precisely what I had anticipated. With no regard for their dignity or self-respect, they were giggling nonstop, grasping at me nonstop, and hurling themselves at me.I tried to be friendly with them for as long as I could, but after about an hour, their conversation became irritating. I was going crazy from that. I had to leave them alone. They weren't any of my friends. They didn't all have the same scent as the girl from this morning. The more time I spent with them, the longer it would take me to locate her. Furthermore, my wolf was furious with me for wasting my time with these women. Regarding these pointless she-wolves, he gave a damn. My wolf was about to change, so I had to physically pull him back by the scruff of his neck.I gave the group my excuse. Though I had hoped for politeness, judging by the expressions on their faces, I think it came across as more strong and irate than I had intended. I couldn't care less; all I wanted was to get away from them so they could move on.I tried to stay away from as many of the pack members as I could. They didn't need to inquire about how my hunt for a partner was progressing. Right now, all I needed was some solitude. I needed to flee.I could only smell her after getting halfway to the edge of the trees. She showed up. My inner beast howled. He was almost out of my grasp once more. With a frustrated groan, I dragged him back while pointing my nose in the general direction of the aroma.I hurriedly followed the scent, doing my best to avoid the people in my path. I'll admit that I may have stepped on a few toes or bumped into a few people. But I gave them no thought. I simply continued moving while maintaining my attention.I went by the dance floor's edge. Ducked beneath the cheap lights that the elders had insisted on placing all around The smell grew more intense the deeper I went into the trees. She remained in place. Not like this morning, when she had already left before I arrived.Even though it was a dark night and the jungle was even darker, it didn't matter. In the dark, I could see just fine, and tonight I would only need my nose. My eyes were closed as I followed the aroma. When I closed my eyes, the smell was more potent and overpowering. The aroma was nearly too strong. My inner wolf was always howling. Even the sounds of the woodland around me were inaudible to me. My entire universe had focused and shrunk to nothing more than the scent of the female my wolf was looking for.I took one final stride while keeping my eyes closed, and my foot slammed into a downed tree. I fell onto the tree in a display of absolute lack of grace—something I never thought would come from me. As soon as I hit the ground, I saw the girl cowering under the downed tree.I actually hit the girl as I fell. When I fell on top of her, she let out a cute but muted cry. My face was covered in so much hair that I really let out a growl of ecstasy. Under me, I felt the girl stiffen, and I immediately smelled anxiety mingling with her seductive aroma. What made her fearful? In order to see the person fate and my wolf both claimed to be my mate, I freed myself from her and stood up. She joined me as I stood up by my elbow and dragged her up with me. Bet, are you there yet? Uncertainly speaking, she was a female. Before me, a female once again gasped. She turned around and ran back toward the gathering, as I was so preoccupied staring in the direction of the speaker that had interrupted us. She took the girl's hand and rushed off as quickly as she could.I pursued her and got close to them. I observed that they had seen two confused-looking males who were moving down the drive. She would leave again if I didn't move quickly."Alpha Klaus!" One of the previous laughing she-wolves called out to me. The entire pack of fifteen she-wolves quickly surrounded me and prevented me from following her. "Where were you, Alpha?" One of the giddies questionedWe were missing you. They were never-ending.I said, "Get out of my way." I barked. I could hear the group's terrified and furious gasps. I had no concerns. In order to catch the girl before she escaped once more, I had to pursue her.I forced my way through the women encircling me. I moved as quickly as I could through the entire crowd. But by the time I arrived, they were gone. The scents had become too blended, and they had vanished. I would have to look for her again. My wolf was incensed. Unintentionally, I let out a yell of protest that appeared to stop the entire group in its tracks."Everyone leave right away!" I screamed at everyone in the room. As I scampered back into the house, I noticed the dread, horror, and perplexity on every face in the room. The innocent folks would be in danger if I didn't get my wolf away from them since he was more enraged than ever.
