Chapter 11: The Calm Before the Storm

Emma had never hosted a book signing before—much less one featuring a Hollywood star. By the time morning arrived, the bookstore was already buzzing with activity. Lily had stayed late the night before to help rearrange the store, setting up a signing table near the window and creating a cozy display with the books Aiden had chosen to recommend. Small fairy lights were strung along the shelves, and a chalkboard sign at the entrance read: Special Event Today! Meet Aiden Carter at Seaside Reads Emma stood in the middle of the store, arms crossed, surveying the scene. Everything looked perfect. So why did she feel like something was about to go horribly wrong? “You’re overthinking again,” Lily teased as she walked past, carrying a stack of books. Emma sighed. “I can’t help it. This whole thing still feels… surreal.” Lily grinned. “You mean having a celebrity casually working in your bookstore? Yeah, I’d say that’s pretty surreal.” Emma rolled her eyes. “That’s not what I meant.” Lily gave her a knowing look. “Oh, please. You can pretend all you want, but I see the way you look at him.” Emma’s face heated. “I do not look at him any particular way.” Lily smirked. “Sure you don’t.” Before Emma could argue, the front door swung open, and in strolled the man of the hour himself—Aiden Carter. As usual, he looked effortlessly put together, dressed in dark jeans and a casual button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up. His hair was slightly tousled, and his signature smirk was firmly in place. “Morning, ladies,” he greeted. Lily waved. “Morning, movie star.” Emma sighed. “You’re late.” Aiden glanced at the clock. “By three minutes.” “Still late.” He chuckled. “You’re really enjoying bossing me around, aren’t you?” Emma crossed her arms. “You’re not a customer today, Aiden. You’re working. Try to act like it.” He gave her a mock salute. “Yes, ma’am.” Lily giggled as she set the last of the books on the signing table. “Alright, everything is set up. Now we just wait.” Emma glanced out the window. A small crowd had already started gathering outside. Some people held books, others held their phones, and a few had hopeful expressions, clearly eager for a glimpse of the actor. Her stomach tightened. What if this got out of hand? What if too many people showed up? What if— Aiden nudged her gently. “Relax. It’ll be fine.” Emma frowned. “How are you so calm about this?” He shrugged. “I’ve done worse. Try doing a red carpet premiere with a hundred flashing cameras in your face.” Emma made a face. “No, thanks.” Aiden grinned. “Exactly.” Lily checked her watch. “Alright, time to open the doors.” With a deep breath, Emma nodded. “Let’s do this.” At first, things went smoothly. Customers trickled in at a steady pace, lining up for Aiden’s autograph and chatting excitedly as they browsed the store. Aiden was surprisingly good at handling the crowd—flashing his easygoing smile, engaging in lighthearted conversation, and even cracking jokes that had people laughing. Emma had to admit… he was good at this. “I didn’t expect him to be so charming in person,” one customer whispered to Emma as she rang up their purchase. Emma glanced toward Aiden, who was currently laughing at something a teenage girl had said. He looked completely at ease, as if he belonged in the store just as much as she did. Emma quickly turned back to the register. “Yeah. He’s full of surprises.” But just as she started to feel like things were under control, the trouble began. It started with the arrival of a lot more people than expected. Within an hour, the bookstore was packed, the line snaking all the way to the back. Lily had to start turning customers away at the door, and Emma could already hear the growing buzz outside as more people gathered, hoping to catch a glimpse of Aiden. Then, the reporters showed up. A woman holding a microphone pushed her way inside, a cameraman following close behind. “Aiden! A quick interview for Entertainment Now?” Aiden, who had just finished signing a book, hesitated. “Uh—” Before he could answer, another reporter joined in. “Aiden, are you officially dating the bookstore owner?” Emma nearly choked on air. “What?!” The room erupted into whispers. Customers turned to stare, eyes flicking between her and Aiden with sudden interest. Aiden blinked, then turned to Emma, clearly surprised. “Well, that’s news to me.” Emma’s face burned. “We are not—” Flash! A camera went off. Emma swore under her breath. Lily hurried over. “Okay, nope! We are not doing this.” She pointed at the reporters. “Out. This is a bookstore, not a gossip site.” The reporters ignored her. One turned back to Aiden. “Aiden, any comment?” Aiden sighed. “Listen, guys, I’m just here to support a local business. That’s all.” “So there’s nothing going on between you two?” Emma groaned. “Absolutely nothing.” Aiden smirked. “Wow. Way to make me feel special.” Emma shot him a glare. More flashes. More murmurs. The energy in the room shifted, excitement turning into something frenzied. Emma’s chest tightened. This was exactly what she didn’t want. The attention, the speculation, the invasion of privacy. As if sensing her discomfort, Aiden suddenly stood and raised his hands. “Alright, that’s enough for today. We’re wrapping up.” A collective groan rippled through the crowd, but Aiden’s tone left no room for argument. Lily quickly moved to usher people out. “Thank you all for coming! We appreciate your support!” It took nearly twenty minutes to clear out the store. By the time the last person left and Lily locked the door, Emma was still fuming. She turned to Aiden. “This is exactly why I didn’t want to do this.” Aiden ran a hand through his hair. “Emma—” “You promised to keep a low profile,” she snapped. “Instead, I’m now the center of some ridiculous dating rumor.” Aiden sighed. “I didn’t expect reporters to show up, okay? This wasn’t planned.” Emma shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. This is what happens when your world collides with mine.” For the first time since she had met him, Aiden looked genuinely guilty. “Emma… I’m sorry.” She exhaled, trying to push down her frustration. “I just want my life to go back to normal.” Aiden hesitated. “Do you?” Emma looked at him, startled by the question. But before she could answer, he gave her a small smile—one that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I should go,” he said quietly. And just like that, he turned and walked out the door. Emma stood frozen, watching him disappear down the street, her heart pounding harder than she cared to admit.
