Chapter Seven: The Reckoning

610 Words
The morning air was sharp and cool, but Zayn felt nothing. His mind was consumed with Lina Vale and the threat she had made—not just to him, but to Adam and Aaliyah. He paced in his penthouse office, hands gripping the edge of his desk. Omar watched silently. “She won’t stop,” Omar said, voice calm but firm. “Lina always wants what she can’t have. And right now, that’s you—and Adam.” Zayn’s jaw tightened. “Then it’s time she learned the consequences of her games.” ⸻ Across town, Lina was preparing her most daring move yet. She had arranged for a private “meeting” with Aaliyah, intending to manipulate her into leaving Zayn and turning away from the child. “Once she fears him… once she doubts herself,” Lina murmured, “then I have everything I want.” She smiled, confident that she could control both mother and child. ⸻ Aaliyah received the message: “Meet me at the old pier. Alone.” Her heart sank. She didn’t trust this. Not at all. When Zayn noticed the anxiety in her eyes, he insisted, “Don’t go alone. I’ll be with you.” Aaliyah shook her head. “I need to handle this. I won’t involve Adam.” Zayn grabbed her hand, his grip firm but gentle. “Then I’ll go with you, whether you want me to or not.” She hesitated, then nodded. She couldn’t deny that the threat terrified her—and she couldn’t deny the relief of having him by her side. ⸻ The pier was deserted, shadows stretching long across the cracked wooden boards. Lina stood waiting, elegant and dangerous, a smirk on her lips. “Aaliyah,” Lina said, voice dripping sweetness, “you really think you can keep him? That boy belongs with me—he deserves a better life than a mother who hides the truth.” Aaliyah’s eyes blazed. “Leave us alone, Lina. You’ll never hurt my son—or me.” Zayn stepped forward, placing himself between Lina and Aaliyah. “Enough,” he said, his voice cold and commanding. “I warned you. Back off. Now.” Lina laughed, a low, dangerous sound. “Oh, Zayn… still trying to control everything? This isn’t your boardroom. You can’t buy loyalty here.” Zayn’s eyes darkened. “No. But I can protect what’s mine. You will never touch my family again.” ⸻ The confrontation escalated as Lina lunged forward, trying to provoke Aaliyah with words and threats. Zayn’s hand shot out, stopping her. Their eyes locked—a silent battle of wills. “You’re finished, Lina,” Zayn said, voice low but deadly. “I will never let you interfere again.” For a moment, Lina looked shocked—unprepared for the fire in him. Slowly, she stepped back, realizing she couldn’t break the bond that had formed between Zayn, Aaliyah, and Adam. “Enjoy it while it lasts,” she said, her voice tight, before turning and disappearing into the shadows. ⸻ Zayn turned to Aaliyah, his heart pounding. “Are you okay?” Aaliyah nodded, tears brimming. “Yes… now.” He took her hands in his, holding them firmly. “I’ll never let anyone hurt you—or Adam. Ever again.” Adam toddled forward, wrapping his small arms around Zayn’s legs. “Daddy safe?” Zayn knelt and hugged him tightly. “Always, Adam. Always.” Aaliyah watched, her heart full, realizing that love wasn’t just words—it was protection, courage, and unwavering commitment. For the first time in years, she allowed herself to hope.
