Chapter 32: Chatter Box Aiden Hildebrand, the other child in my life, sat quietly, tucked inside his own little world, and colored while I taught his father about the dark places of one’s soul through the works of Joyce Carol Oates. Such themes of the author’s works included murder, love, lust, betrayal, rape, and a woman’s strength. Oates happened to be one of my favorite authors, which I wanted to share with Matthew, opening his world to a mastermind of fiction and impossible-to-put-down tales. Matthew hung on my every word, captivated by my lecture, perhaps in love with Oates’s poems and works. He confessed to the class that he enjoyed a short novel by the author called Black Water.
