CHAPTER TWO:THE DEVIL WHO COULDN'T DRIVE

979 Words
The storm outside worsened the moment Kang Minho left the hotel suite. Thunder shook the glass walls while rain crashed endlessly against the city. Han Areum remained frozen in her seat. Her eyes slowly drifted toward the marriage contract still lying untouched on the table. Then toward the car keys Minho had grabbed moments ago. “Chairman… you can’t drive.” Director Choi’s voice kept replaying inside her head. Can’t drive? What did that even mean? The man looked perfectly fine. No injuries. No disability. Yet the fear on Director Choi’s face had been real. Very real. “Miss Han.” She looked up quickly. Director Choi forced a polite smile, though tension still lingered on his face. “I apologize for what happened.” Areum hesitated before asking carefully, “Why did he leave like that?” Silence. Director Choi adjusted his glasses slowly. “There was an emergency.” “What kind of emergency?” Another silence. This time longer. Then “That is not something I can discuss.” Of course. Rich people and their secrets. Areum slowly stood from her seat. “Then I should leave.” Director Choi immediately looked surprised. “You’re rejecting the contract?” Her fingers tightened around her bag. “I haven’t decided yet.” That was the truth. Because no matter how insane this situation felt ₩500 million was life-changing money. And her mother was running out of time. Director Choi studied her quietly before speaking again. “Chairman Kang is not a bad person.” Areum almost laughed at that. Not a bad person? The man looked like he scared children for fun. Still… She remembered his eyes. Not cold. Just tired. Painfully tired. Like someone who had not rested in years. “Then why does he look so unhappy?” she asked softly before she could stop herself. Director Choi froze briefly. Something unreadable crossed his face. But before he could answer His phone rang suddenly. The moment he saw the caller ID, his expression changed instantly. “Chairman Kang?” He answered quickly. Areum watched as the color slowly drained from his face. “…What?” A terrifying silence followed. Then “No, no, don't move him yet! We’re coming immediately!” The call ended. Director Choi grabbed his coat hurriedly. “What happened?” Areum immediately asked. For the first time since meeting him, Director Choi looked genuinely shaken. “There was an accident.” Her heartbeat stopped. “…What?” “He crashed the car.” The words slammed into the room heavily. For a second, Areum couldn’t move. I couldn't think. The image of Kang Minho walking out with those car keys suddenly flashed through her mind. “Chairman… you can’t drive.” A strange feeling crawled through her chest. Fear. Not for herself. For him. Which made absolutely no sense. Why would she care about a cold billionaire she barely knew? Yet her feet moved before her thoughts could catch up. “Where is he?” Director Choi blinked in surprise. “Miss Han” “Where?” Rain poured violently over the city roads as the black car sped through traffic. Inside, silence stretched painfully. Areum stared outside the window while her heart beat strangely fast. She didn’t understand why she came. Maybe because she knew what it felt like when life cornered someone. Maybe because despite how cold Kang Minho looked Something about him seemed broken. Dangerously broken. “Was it serious?” she finally asked. Director Choi kept his eyes forward. “We don’t know yet.” A pause. Then “This is the first time Chairman Kang has touched a steering wheel in two years.” Sorry lines appeared in her forehead “Why?” Silence again. Clearly, everyone around Kang Minho loved keeping secrets. But this time, Director Choi answered quietly. “There was an accident two years ago.” Areum’s chest tightened slightly. “Someone died?” Director Choi looked away. “…We arrived.” That wasn’t an answer. Which somehow felt worse. Bright flashing lights illuminated the rainy night ahead. Police cars. Ambulances. Crowds gathering beneath umbrellas. The moment Areum stepped out of the car, cold rain hit her face immediately. Then she saw it. A black luxury car crashed violently against the highway barrier. The front was completely destroyed. Her breathing caught instantly. That car… It looked horrifying. How fast had he been driving? People moved frantically around the scene while officers blocked the road. Director Choi rushed forward immediately. “Chairman Kang!” Areum followed behind without hesitation 0. Then suddenly She saw him. Kang Minho stood near the damaged car while rain soaked through his black suit completely. Blood dripped slowly from his forehead. But he looked completely unaware of it. His dark eyes remained fixed on something ahead. No emotion. No movement. Just emptiness. The ambulance crew kept trying to approach him, but he ignored them entirely. Like he couldn’t hear anyone. Like he wasn’t fully there. Areum slowed down. Something about him felt wrong. Terrifyingly wrong. Then she followed his gaze. And froze. Another car sat several meters away. Crushed. Destroyed. Blood stained the shattered windshield. A man was being carried into an ambulance. Unconscious. Maybe dead. Suddenly Kang Minho staggered backward slightly. His breathing became uneven. One hand gripped his chest tightly. Panic. No Fear. Pure fear. Rain poured harder around him while the flashing ambulance lights reflected against his pale face. Then quietly Almost like a broken whisper He said, “…blood…” Areum’s eyes widened. His entire body was trembling. Not from the cold. From terror. That powerful, terrifying man looked seconds away from collapsing. And for some reason Nobody moved toward him. Not the ambulance crew. Not Director Choi. Nobody. Almost like they had seen this before. Kang Minho suddenly took another shaky step backward.
