The first encounter

*Chapter One: The First Encounter* Sophia Romano stood at the top of the steps outside her firm, her heels clicking against the marble floor as she walked briskly down toward the street. She had a meeting in an hour, but her mind wandered to the case she had been working on all week. It was high-profile—a defense for a prominent businessman who had ties to some unsavory characters. She didn’t think much of it, believing it to be just another case. But there was something about this one that unsettled her. “Ms. Romano,” a voice broke through her thoughts. She turned, eyes narrowing slightly, as she spotted the man who had called her name. Luca Moretti stood before her, his eyes as dark as midnight, his suit perfectly tailored to his broad shoulders. There was something dangerous about him, something that sent a chill down her spine. Yet, at the same time, she felt an undeniable pull. “Yes?” she said, her voice steady but with a hint of caution. “I’m Luca Moretti,” he introduced himself, offering her a smile that was both charming and intimidating. “I believe we’re working on the same case.” Sophia raised an eyebrow. She had heard of the Moretti family. They were notorious, powerful, and ruthless. But Luca was nothing like the men she had imagined. He was calm, composed, with an air of authority that made her feel small in comparison. Yet, something about his presence made her heart race. “Of course,” she replied, taking a step back. “I’m handling the defense for Mr. Ricci, yes.” Luca’s lips quirked into a slight smile. “I thought you might be. I was hoping we could have a word about the case.” Sophia hesitated for a moment. Her instinct told her to decline, to stay away from this man whose reputation preceded him. But something in his gaze made her curious, made her want to know more. “I have an hour free,” she said, surprising herself. “What’s on your mind?” Luca gave a slight nod and gestured for her to follow him. “Let’s take a walk. I think we could come to a mutual understanding about how best to handle this case.” As they walked, the tension between them was palpable. Luca kept his distance, but Sophia could feel the weight of his gaze on her, like he was studying her every move. “So,” Sophia began, trying to break the silence, “what is it you think we should do with this case,Luca paused, his eyes narrowing slightly. “I don’t think you fully understand who you’re dealing with. Mr. Ricci is not just some businessman. He’s someone who owes loyalty to a lot of people, people who can be… unforgiving.” Sophia swallowed, her mind racing. She had suspected that Ricci’s ties to the mafia were deeper than what he let on, but hearing it out loud made her blood run cold. “And what does that have to do with me?” she asked, trying to sound unshaken. Luca turned to face her, his expression softening slightly. “Everything, Ms. Romano. This case will require more than just legal expertise. It will require… understanding. And a level of trust that’s difficult to find.” Sophia’s heart thudded in her chest. There was something unspoken between them, something she didn’t quite understand yet. But Luca Moretti had just made the game personal.
