“Look at Mia, she is smart, talented and beautiful! Why don’t you marry her?” Mrs Wright suggested unexpectedly. The entire room went silent, as we tried to process what she had just said.
“Mom do you even know what you are talking about?” Mr. Grayson yelled while walking around the room in frustration. His face had an annoyed expression that he had no regret in showing to his own mother.
I really expected this type of reaction from Mr. Grayson to his mother’s sudden declaration but Mia on the other hand looked quite happy! As if she wanted this thing to happen. Her face was glowing while her cheeks were blushing in red.
I get that she was obsessed with Mr. Grayson but marrying without properly knowing or loving each other just seemed wrong. Mia could not be that selfish, no one could!
And just when Mia could not prove me anymore wrong, she stepped forward and stood in front of Mrs Wright and held her hands. She seemed grateful and extremely excited as her face could not contain it.
“Ma’am it would be my honour to marry your son.” she declared with excitement within herself.
My jaw dropped upon hearing such a thing come out from her mouth. She could not be that seriously, could she?
Mrs Wright though looked like she was on cloud nine! The look on her face said it all. It was as if she was desperately waiting for those words to escape Mia’s lips. They both started to giggle at one and other while tightly holding their hands, interlocking their fingers.
Mr Grayson was not happy at Mia’s strange statement and so he walked away from the corner he was previously standing still and went up to his mother and Mia, furious.
“Mia, do you even know what you are saying?” he asked with an annoyed tone in his voice.
“Come on Grayson! If she is all set to marry you, why can’t you accept it as well? You know how long I have been trying to get you married, right?” Mrs. Wright poured her heart out, desperately trying to get him to accept Mia.
“Mia is perfect for you! She worked with you for years and has always been faithful to our family! Its like a match made in heaven! Please accept her, please do it for me” she added while her eyes began to get teary, and she started to lose her breath.
It seemed as though she was profoundly serious about his wedding, to the point that she was literally begging him to accept Mia as his bride. I do not know about them, but I could not fathom living with someone who I don’t love for the rest of my life, let alone starting a whole damn family. I wondered why Mr Grayson’s mother was acting like her son’s marriage was a life-or-death situation.
I could see Mr. Grayson’s face and his frustration. The anger was evident in him, but his mother’s tears were distracting him.
“Ok, mom… I’ll marry her but first you calm down!” Mr Grayson yelled as he held his mother’s hand while making her drink some water from the glass that was lying on the table.
His mother’s eyes popped out of their sockets and her smile couldn’t get anymore wider, “Really? You will?”
Mr Grayson nodded to his mother’s question with a worried look on his face, completely different from his mother’s and Mia’s expressions.
“Oh, I’m so happy!!” His mother exclaimed as she began giving him a tight hug.
Mia stood besides them, looking over Mr Grayson with a huge smile on her face. At that point, I knew she was upto no good. The look on her face made her seem psychotic. It seemed like she was waiting long to get Mr. Grayson’s yes!
“I’ll go and plan the engagement ceremony.” Mrs. Wright said before rushing out of the room along with Mia.
The excitement could not be contained within them. Mr Grayson on the other hand looked quite disturbed. This was the first time I was seeing another side of him rather than being exposed to his arrogant side most of the time.
“Sir, are you ok?” I asked as I stepped closer to him.
When he looked up to me and laid his eyes on mine, all I could see was pain in his eyes. It really showcased how deeply hurt and concerned he was.
“Of course not! What do you think?” He yelled suddenly, unscrewing the bottle of emotions that was within him.
I flinched at his sudden change of reaction, but I understood where he was coming from. His mother really had put him in a tight spot.
“Now you tell me, Miss Williams, would you react the same way as Mia did if my mother would do this to you?”
I shook my head at his question and said, “No! Marrying someone is a commitment of a lifetime! I would never marry someone without taking the time to know them and understand them.!”
Mr Grayson started walking up towards me until he was standing right in front of me. His bright blue eyes glistened while the fan in the room caused his hair to blow along with the slight wind. The way he was staring right into my eyes felt so different, like I had never seen it before.
After a few seconds of silence, he began to speak but in a much lower volume than before, “So do you mean that you would marry me if you knew and… understood me?”
I raised my eyebrows at his question. That was unexpected and left me speechless for a moment. I was hesitating to respond as Mr. Grayson continued to stare into my eyes. “I- “my phone began to play my embarrassing ringtone.
I took it out from my pocket and noticed Katie’s name on the caller id. I squinted upon looking at her name.
“Just excuse me, I-I have to take this call.” After quickly excusing myself, I walked to a corner in the living room and swiped the screen to answer the call.
“Hello?!” I said in a very unenthusiastic tone. I often was not in the mood to converse with Katie and that time was no exception.
“Hi Avery!” she answered in a very delightful tone in comparison to her usual way of speaking to me.
“What do you want Katie?” I asked.
I was in a such a hurry to end the call with her. Just hearing her voice made my blood boil. Her speaking well to me for once did not excuse all the horrible stuff she did to me and dad.
“Ok I’ll get to the point.......So see last night I was scrolling through Mr Grayson’s office’s website, just out of curiosity…. and I learnt that he has a vault inside his cabin which has thousands of spare dollars.” she said in excitement.
I got nervous at her mention of money because I knew how money hungry, she was.
“Yeah, so?” I replied in a low voice, trying so hard not to yell at her.
“You have to steal it for me!” she demanded as I was left shocked.
