Chapter 14: Mia's Secret

1306 Words
I looked at Mia’s angry look and I knew trouble was awaiting me. The atmosphere became tensed as her eyes glared at me.     I tried to smile and leave the area but, in an instant, Mia stood in my way, preventing me from reaching the living room.  She stood tall as a guard to keep me in front of her.    “Is everything alright?” I asked curiously.    Upon hearing my question, she squinted and looked straight into my eyes with no movement. It was weird in a way to see her behave like this.     “Don’t act dumb, Avery!” she yelled with her eyes popped out of their sockets.    My eyebrows bent towards each other. What on earth was she talking about and why are everyone yelling at me today? My head was filled with unanswered questions as I watched Mia’s anger range within her body.     “I’m sorry?” I replied.     “I saw you with Mr. Grayson. I know your secret!” she declared with a heavy voice declaring her immense anger.     “Wait did you spy on us last night?” I questioned.      “Yes! But what you did was even worse!” she responded, this time leaning in close to my face.     “What did I do?”     She let go of her crisscrossed hands and started clapping as quietly as possible to not create a scene. “I know, no one can resist Mr. Grayson’s charm. Not even you!”     “For the time I have been with him, I have been trying so hard to get his attention and you thought you could snatch him in just one day? I don’t think so!” she added.     I could not believe what she was trying to imply. “Wait! There must be some misunderstanding!” I stopped her from continuing.     “Mr Grayson was the one who entered my room and it just to assign a task, that’s all!” I justified myself.     “Even if he did come on his own, he’s still spending time with you and that’s all I see”    Was this girl kidding me? I barely know the guy and she thought I was trying to seduce him. Can this day not get any worse?    Before I could even say anything, she continued without even catching her breathe. She looked like an insane person. “Mark my words Avery! Mr. Grayson is mine and no one else’s! He will be mine soon!”    And with that, she left and entered the living room. The lack of sleep was bad enough and now Mia’s fury?!    I dragged my exhausted body towards the living room where I saw everyone seated together in the chairs surrounding the large dining table, eating breakfast.     I sighed and walked towards one of the chairs. I could see Mr Grayson at the dining table along with Mia sitting right next to him. I turned my head away as Mia did not like me even glancing at him.    As I began to pull the chair out, Mr Grayson yelled from the opposite side of the table, “Stop... Avery... you’ll sit here.” He said while pointing to a chair next to him where Mia was seated.     “But sir, I am sitting here.” Mia objectified with a confused expression; it was clear that she wanted to be near him. I was hoping that he would just let it go and allow me to sit wherever I preferred which was far away from him.     The universe was really cruel I thought as he ordered Mia to get up from the chair but this time in a lighter tone than usual. I guess he didn’t want to yell in front of his mother who was sitting down witnessing this entire situation while munching on some toast.     I began walking to the seat near Mr. Grayson and as Mia and I crossed paths, she gave me a very angry look like before but this time, a lot more intense.     I couldn’t believe she was blaming me for this! Did it look like I had even an ounce of control over Mr Grayson’s actions? The room was filled with talk and laughter as everyone continued to enjoy their breakfast.     I was a little intimidated while sitting so close to Mr Grayson as I remembered last night’s events. As I was drinking a glass of pulpy orange juice, without any type of warning, Mr Grayson spread his arms wide, thus knocking his cup of hot coffee all over me.     I sprang out of the coffee-soaked chair as my legs and hands were burning with the intense temperature of the coffee.     I ran away towards my room in order to change my outfit but that was after I heard Mr Grayson say, “Oops!” in such a casual way.     Oh, I realised that he may have wanted to take revenge by doing the exact same thing I did to him by accident!     I bust the doors of my room open and ran into the washroom and poured ice cold water on top of my hands and legs to ease the pain.     The burns from the coffee eventually removed the want of sleep from within me so at least some good occurred today.     After a quick change of clothes, I noticed the sheets of paper distributed all over my bed. A bolt of fear struck me hard once I learnt that those sheets of paper were of the contract that I had to submit to Mr Grayson.     Seems that the lack of sleep earlier made me forget about the task. I held my head that was leaning down in disappointment and tiredness.     I lightly slapped the side of my cheek to bring myself back into reality after my mind slipped into a different world briefly.     I bent my knees and began to pick every sheet of paper from the bed.     After doing so, I bunched them up neatly and stapled them together with a stapler that I found in one of the drawers of the table.  I rushed out of the room to find Mr Grayson before he realised that I didn’t submit the contract and would lash out again.     Just before I was about to enter the study room, I heard Mrs Wright’s voice say, “Come on now Grayson, you have to get married sooner or later!”    I halted right outside the room near the doorframe to try and hear what the two were talking about.     The word “marriage” didn’t suit Mr Arrogant. I couldn’t which girl would be so idiotic to marry such a person.     “Mom, I’ll find a girl don’t worry!” Mr Grayson stated with annoyance filled in his voice.  He did not seem keen to carry out the conversation any longer.    I smirked a bit after listening to what he said.     “Good luck with that” I responded in my mind.     “You have been telling me this for months! Now it’s time I try to do something. I’ll find a girl for you!” The mother responded.     His mother was desperate for him to get married. This house was like a circus show. One day some drama was bound to occur. I would feel so sad for the unfortunate girl he would marry.    Suddenly while I was eavesdropping into the conversation, I felt someone tap my shoulders.     “You?” a voice appeared from behind.     My eyes popped in fear as I knew I was caught.
