Avery’s pov:
I woke bright and early the next morning. I was happy to have gotten some good sleep as the past day was spent horribly.
It was unbearable as the whole day was spent listening to Katie’s insults and her tips to be an “elegant woman”. She could not believe the way I had distracted Grayson even when it was not intentional. I tried to explain it was an accident multiple times but she refused to listen.
I was so bored that I fell asleep quite early yesterday on purpose to avoid any confrontation with that demon. But of course, not before calling up Mr Jones about the investigation but to my horrible luck, no update was recorded so far once again. I too was amazed at my own patience for this.
Anyways, I woke up and headed straight to the bathroom to get nice and fresh. I brushed my teeth until they sparkled, had a shower until I was squeaky clean and brushed my hair until it was smooth.
I put on my last suit that I had left after staining the last one with dark strong coffee.
I recalled the smell of the coffee from the previous day and wondered how Mr Grayson ever liked such a bitter concentration of coffee. If I were in his place, I would douse it with milk and sugar!
As I walked down the wooden staircase that was almost worn out, I stumbled upon Katie.
“You better pass that interview or else you won’t have a home anymore!” she threatened while holding the main door open.
I ignored her threat and walked out with confidence. I couldn’t let anything bring me down! This day was going to decide my life. I couldn’t afford to mess it up at all with her burden.
I hoped in the taxi and headed straight to the next city. I kept revising what I was going to say in the interview, in my head to avoid what happened yesterday.
As the tires of the taxi screeched, I realised I had reached the same building.
Even though I looked confident on the outside, I felt nervous on the inside as deep down, I didn’t quite as much believe in my clumsy self. I walked into the lobby and sat down in the lounge that the lady directed to, yesterday. I sat patiently while constantly checking my almost broken phone to pass the time.
My eyes landed on the clock which was placed on the wall above and it read “11:30 am”. I got a bit worried and confused as the interview was supposed to commence at 11 am. Was Mr. Grayson late or did I mess up again?
I sighed and got up from my seat. In anticipation for his arrival, I started walking around, trying to find someone who I could ask about Mr Grayson’s whereabouts.
I walked further away from the lounge and found the same lady who I talked to yesterday at the front desk. My curiosity led me to ask her about his whereabouts. As I was inquiring about Mr Grayson, someone tapped my shoulders from behind.
I stared at the lady and noticed that she had a nervous expression on her face and I didn’t know why. My brows contracted as I onlooked her puzzled face. Her eyes were not narrowing at me but towards my back.
I turned around to see who was standing near me. To my shock, I found out that Mr. Grayson himself was standing right behind me. His face gave me a skeptical look and he didn’t look too happy for some reason.
He looked charming to say the least. His intense jaw and luscious beard made me drool over him. He was the man of anyone’s dreams but he did have to change a bit of his attitude. I never appreciated his rough behaviour.
My mouth slowly morphed into a shaky smile and I proceeded to greet him, only to get an unexpected response from him.
“Miss Williams, I gave you a second chance and you decided to thank me by coming in late?”
After hearing such a statement, I squinted and wondered why he said that. Waiting for my response he began to tap his feet to the floor.
I arrived well before time and waited patiently at the lounge. Mr Grayson was the one who showed up late and now he was blaming me? It was not right.
I replied with no hesitation while pointing to the lady who stood still at her spot behind the desk, “But Sir, I was here! You can ask this lady, I arrived before 11am!”
He scoffed after listening to me and folded his hands. He kind of resembled Katie to me and I didn’t like one bit of it.
“Well, Miss Williams, I walked in from the back door to the lounge and found no one sitting there, so unless you’re telling me that my eye sights bad, can we proceed with the interview and avoid any further delay?”
What? I was sure that I was present at the right time. Maybe he walked in as I was strolling about away from the waiting area...
I wanted to defend myself so bad but I just kept my mouth shut and went with the flow. Sure, he was wrong but what could I do? I didn’t want to piss him off anymore.
So, I followed him to his office and sat down on the black chair in front of his humongous leather chair which was located behind his shiny marbled desk.
He placed his black briefcase onto the table and snapped it wide open, pulling up some papers which had some black text typed on them.
I just sat still nervously on my chair while the sunlight radiated through Mr Grayson’s face, making him glow and highlight his grumpy face.
“So, I’ve read your resumé and I feel you’re qualified for the job so I won’t waste your time with questions.” he explained while scanning through some documents.
“Wait really? I’m qualified to become the sales manager?
I was jumping with joy inside. I really couldn’t believe to hear those very words coming out from Mr. Arrogant here. Was this a dream? I was desperate for someone to pinch me!
The joy and happiness in me suddenly shattered into a million pieces when I heard Mr Grayson say “No!”
“No? What do you mean?” I asked while raising one of my eyebrows, staring at Mr Grayson.
Was this a joke? First, he said I was accepted and then he said no? What was going on? I was in dire need for answers as the suspense was killing me.
“You won’t be the sales manager.......but you will be my personal assistant!” he clarified while giving out a smirk.
Wait what? A personal assistant? Of his? When did this happen? Katie applied for a sales manager! So, when did this topic of being a personal assistant arrive? Was this the prank? I swear I had question after question circling around my head.
“Sir but I- “I tried to speak up against this unexpected declaration but he didn’t let me by telling me to stop.
“I’ll see you tomorrow at 6am at my house, here’s the address.” he instructed while handing over a black card that contained his home address in white letters.
I stared at the card in confusion as if I had never seen a card before in my life. I was hit with so many unexpected things.
Why did I have to go in his house? Why not the office? Was I the only one called to his house or did all the employees have to work at his house? Literally nothing made sense to me.
I tried to raise these questions to him but he casually got up and left the room, leaving me no chance to have a word with him. At this point, I wasn’t excited at all for the job! All the excitement I had built up earlier, disappeared in an instance.
I wasn’t ready to encounter any more surprises so I hoped that nothing bad would happen at my first day of work.
