The woman in the photograph

1099 Words
The cabin became completely silent. Sophia stared at the photograph with trembling hands while thunder echoed outside across the lake. The woman beside her parents looked almost identical to her. Same gray eyes. Same dark curls. Same smile. Her chest tightened painfully. “Who is this?” she whispered. Luna shook her head slowly. “I found it hidden inside your apartment after whoever broke in left.” Thompson took the photograph carefully. The moment he saw it, his expression changed completely. Shock. Then fear. “You know her,” Sophia realized immediately. Thompson remained silent for too long. “Thompson.” He looked at her slowly. “That’s your mother’s sister.” Sophia froze. “My aunt?” “Yes.” “I don’t have an aunt.” “You were never supposed to know.” Confusion crashed into her instantly. “What does that mean?” Thompson stared at the photograph as if it carried ghosts. “Her name was Isabella Benson.” The name felt strangely familiar. Like hearing part of a forgotten dream. Sophia sat down slowly near the fireplace, trying to steady her breathing. “My parents never mentioned her.” “That was intentional,” Thompson answered quietly. Luna crossed her arms impatiently. “Okay, I officially need a giant explanation because this family drama is becoming criminally confusing.” Thompson exhaled slowly. “Isabella disappeared twenty years ago.” Sophia looked up sharply. “Disappeared?” “She worked with my father before Blackwood Gallery existed.” Fear crept into Sophia’s chest again. “What kind of work?” Thompson hesitated. Then answered carefully. “She investigated powerful organizations connected to trafficking stolen art, money laundering, and political corruption.” The room felt colder instantly. “And Samuel?” “He worked beneath the people running it.” Sophia’s eyes returned to the photograph. “What happened to her?” “No one knows.” “But you think she’s alive.” Damien looked at her directly. “Yes.” Luna blinked. “Wait. If she’s alive, why hide her existence from Sophia?” Thompson’s jaw tightened. “Because Isabella discovered something dangerous before she vanished.” Sophia’s heartbeat quickened. “What?” Thompson spoke quietly now. “She believed someone inside Blackwood Gallery was connected to your family long before your parents became involved.” Silence. Sophia stared at him in disbelief. “That makes no sense.” “It didn’t then either.” The fire cracked softly beside them. Then Sophia noticed something else about the photograph. In the corner, written in faded ink: Find the truth beneath Saint Marrow. She frowned. “What is Saint Marrow?” Thompson’s expression darkened immediately. “No.” “What?” “We’re not going there.” “Why?” “Because Saint Marrow Hospital closed fifteen years ago after multiple deaths.” Luna looked horrified. “That sentence alone should end this conversation.” But Sophia already saw it. The fear in Thompson’s eyes again. Not fear for himself. For her. “That’s where my aunt disappeared, isn’t it?” Thompson stayed silent. Which meant yes. Sophia stood immediately. “Then we go there.” “No.” “You don’t get to decide that.” “Sophia, listen to me carefully.” His voice sharpened. “Saint Marrow is dangerous.” “So everything is connected to my family, apparently.” “That place destroyed people.” Anger finally rose inside her chest. “I’m tired of everyone hiding things from me!” The words echoed through the cabin. Luna quietly stepped backward. Smartly avoiding the emotional explosion. Sophia looked directly at Thompson. “You keep protecting me by lying.” “I’m trying to keep you alive.” “And I’m trying to know the truth.” For several seconds, neither of them moved. Then Thompson spoke softly. “If we go there, everything changes.” “It already has.” Pain flickered across his face because he knew she was right. Finally, he looked away first. “We leave at sunrise.” Later that night, Luna fell asleep on the cabin couch after exhausting herself with complaints and panic. Sophia couldn’t sleep. Again. She stepped quietly onto the cabin porch overlooking the dark lake. Cold wind brushed through her hair while fog drifted over the water below. Behind her, the cabin door opened softly. Thompson stepped outside. “You should rest,” he said quietly. “So should you.” He leaned against the wooden railing beside her. For a while, neither spoke. The silence between them no longer felt awkward. Just heavy with things unsaid. “Sophia.” She looked at him. “If we find answers tomorrow, there’s a chance you’ll hate what you learn.” Her chest tightened slightly. “You already said that before.” “And I meant it.” She studied his face beneath the dim porch light. “You really think I could hate you?” Thompson gave a humorless smile. “You don’t know everything yet.” The sadness in his voice hurt more than she expected. Sophia stepped closer slowly. “Then tell me one truth,” she whispered. His eyes met hers immediately. “One truth you’ve never said out loud.” For the first time in a long while, Thompson looked uncertain. Vulnerable. Then quietly: “The night your parents died… your mother asked me to save you first.” Sophia stopped breathing for a moment. “What?” “She knew they wouldn’t survive.” Pain flashed across his face again. “She made me promise to keep you away from this world.” Tears filled Sophia’s eyes instantly. “She thought this would reach me someday.” “Yes.” The grief between them suddenly felt unbearable. Sophia touched his hand gently. “You kept your promise.” “No,” Damien whispered. “Because now you’re standing in the middle of it.” Before she could answer, headlights suddenly flashed through the trees. Both of them turned instantly. A black SUV stopped near the cabin road. Thompson’s expression hardened immediately. “That’s impossible.” “What?” “No one knows this location.” The SUV door opened slowly. A tall woman stepped out wearing a long black coat. Even from a distance, Sophia felt her heartbeat stop. The woman looked exactly like the photograph . Exactly like her. Thompson went completely still beside her. Then the woman spoke from the darkness. “Sophia.” Her voice trembled slightly. “I finally found you.”
