Chapter 16

Skye

All of the adults are working above ground on their different booby traps and I think they are also training as well. I offered to stay down here with AJ because I had so much fun with him yesterday.

AJ keeps giving me a weird look and I ask, “What’s up, kid?”

He tilts his head to the side and says, “Your heart is really pink when you’re around me. My mom’s heart is always pink too, what does that mean?”

My eyebrows furrow and I ask, “What are you talking about?”

“Well, I see colors and I can tell if people are good or not. But sometimes I see colors only for a moment and only in certain areas. Like my mom her heart is always pink when she’s around me and I don’t really know why and RyRy’s heart is pink too, but nobody else has ever had it towards me, but now you do. And like sometimes when my mom is upset with me her head will have a reddish orange-y color. I think that means she’s angry with me. There other colors too, but I don’t know what the pink is.”

“Well, if I had to guess I would think the pink means love. After spending so much time with you yesterday I kind of view you like my little brother and I love you.”

He nods, “That makes sense.”

“Do you only see it with me, Ryan, and your mom?”

He shakes his head no, “Tom and Emma have it with everyone except me but it’s strongest with each other. Same for Jas and Ava.”

I shake my head in surprise, “Did you just call Jasper, Jas?”

He grins and nods, “I keep saying it wrong and Ava thought it was funny so I keep doing it.”

I giggle and he continues, “RyRy has pink around mama and mama has it with him, but it’s really small for both of them. Meanwhile the pink mama has for me is like super pink!”

I chuckle and say, “Your power is really interesting, AJ.”

He smiles, “I like yours. I’d love to shock the people that look at my mama in a bad way.”

That’s interesting. I ask, “How can you tell if they are looking at her in a bad way?”

“They’re color is a dark purple… almost black sometimes and if they see my mom and don’t like her their eyes turn that same color.”

“Huh, that’s interesting.”

He nods in agreement and asks, “So, how are we going to get my mama and RyRy together?”

I chuckle, “Hon, I don’t think it’s our place to decide that.”

He scowls at me and huffs, “I like him. I think my mama does too.”

“I know you do, but your mommy needs to like him too. Your mommy has a hard time being in a relationship like that. She doesn’t want to take any time away from you.”

I hear the hatch open up and both AJ and I turn to look and see Parker and Ryan come down. Both look frustrated and AJ mutters, “They’re reddish orange.”

They must be in a fight.

Ryan

Parker and I set up the cameras around our land together. I was actually surprised she wanted to go with me, but I guess us hanging out last night helped our friendship more than I thought. We haven’t spoken much but there’s no real need to fill the silence as we’re comfortable just being around one another.

I watch as she finishes setting up a camera up in a tree and asks me to check the monitor to make sure it was aimed properly. I gave her a thumbs up and she teleported herself back down to me. She stands up and stretches her legs out and says, “You know, squatting in that position for so long is killer.”

I chuckle, “I’m sure it is, you know, I can do the next one.”

She shakes her head no, “It’s easier for me because I can teleport in and out it’s less risk of someone getting hurt.” She exhales, “We both know our group can’t handle any big injuries right now.”

I nod understanding her point and I look at her face and she seems very focused. I ask, “You okay, Par?”

She looks towards me in surprise as I got her out of her daze and she says, “Yeah, yeah, just um, thinking.”

“About?”

“Well, I don’t know how to tell you this.”

“Just spit it out, Parker, you can tell me anything.”

She nods and from her perplexed expression I can tell she’s trying to convince herself whether or not to trust me with this. She breathes out, “Okay, um, Hunter got into my head yesterday. I don’t know what AJ did, but he forced me out of the dream.”

My jaw clenches from just hearing his name. I am so sick of that psycho being a part of our lives. I huff, “What did he want?”

“What does he ever want, Ryan?” She answers as she looks over at me and then sighs, “He wants me.”

“It’s not going to happen.”

She’s quiet, but I can see her jaw is clenched and her brow is furrowed in concentration. I ask, “What?”

“What if I go?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me, Parker?”

She shrugs, “He promised immunity for everyone if I came willingly. On top of that I think I could take him-”

“Are you freaking kidding me?!” I raise my voice and I see her wince slightly from my yelling. I huff as I try to calm myself down and say, “You almost got captured! What makes you think you’re ready to take him when you couldn’t even handle a few Aberrations on your own?”

I see the fire in her eyes as she’s getting angry over my words. She says, “I couldn’t handle it because of the people around him. But Ryan, he was weak? Couldn’t you sense it? He didn’t even look like himself! Normally he is proper, and he cares about his appearance, but he doesn’t anymore. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were crazy and animalistic and I could just swear that he is shorter.”

I sigh, “He could’ve changed from the last time you saw him, Parker.”

“He was weaker, Ryan, if I had him alone I could’ve taken him.”

“So, what your whole plan is to purposely go to him and get him alone. If he’s weaker don’t you think he will count on that happening?”

She shakes her head no, “I don’t think so, he wants to have s*x with me and have a child and I don’t think he would let anyone see me in that way. It may take a bit, but I think that at some point we would be alone, and I could kill him. And in the meantime I wouldn’t have to worry about any of you because he said you would all have immunity.”

“Parker, this is a bad idea.”

She argues, “You won’t even give it a chance!”

“Because we can’t lose you again, Parker! What about AJ?”

Her eyes soften a little and she turns back towards the bunker and walks away. I follow after her and as I climb down into the bunker I say, “Parker.”

She continues to walk past Skye and AJ and I follow after her knowing we needed to finish his conversation before she does something rash.

I can’t lose her again.
