Parker
It’s been another week inside this bunker, and I’m surprised how well everyone is getting along. Of course, we all get annoyed with each other here and there, but for me and AJ after having five years of it just being the two of us it is a really nice change of pace to be around other people.
I’m making mine and AJ’s lunch when Tom comes beside me and he asks quietly, “So, what do you think our next move should be?”
I smirk, “Why are you asking me? I’m technically the outsider to all of this.”
He rolls his eyes and says, “Come on, Parker. Tell me what you’re thinking.”
I answer, “I think at some point we need to get back out of the bunker. We need to set up some traps out there and even some cameras for us to be able to tell how close they are to us. We also need to figure out a second way out of here.”
I shake my head and add, “I can’t believe you didn’t think of having a second exit. Anyways, we need another exit if any of them came down here we are stuck like ducks.”
Tom smirks at my comment and I say, “We can’t hide down here forever and we need to keep up with training if we want any hope of defeating them for good.”
He nods in agreement and says, “We need to go to the store and buy a lot of stuff.”
I nod and he asks, “Do you want AJ to come with us or should he stay here?”
I look towards my son who is laughing as he plays Go Fish with all of the girls. The thought of Hunter seeing him and targeting him breaks my heart and I say, “He should stay here.”
Tom nods and says, “You’re a good mom, Parker, but you know you won’t be able to protect him forever.”
I breathe heavily as I nod, “I know, but for now I can. And I’m going to do my best to make sure Hunter is dead sooner than later so we can have a somewhat normal life.”
He nods in agreement and says, “I’ll see if Skye would be willing to stay with him. She’s probably the most powerful out of all of us that she could protect him the most.”
I nod in agreement and say, “I’ll see what AJ thinks.”
I can feel Tom watching me as I walk over to AJ and pass him his bowl of macaroni and cheese. I say, “Hey love.”
He looks towards me and I say, “I’m going to go into town later and I would like you to stay here. What do you think about us seeing if Skye would stay with you? Do you like that?”
He nods, “I love her mama, she’s got good color.”
I smile and ask, “Well, doesn’t everyone?”
He nods, “Yeah, but she’s young and the rest of you aren’t.”
I bust out laughing and I give him a noogie and say, “Take it back! I’m not old yet!”
His giggles make me laugh harder as he yells playfully, “Never!”
Blaze begins to playfully bark and try to separate the two of us and I begin tickling AJ making him cackle with his adorable laughter for a few minutes. Then I let him go so that he could enjoy his food. I look over at Skye and I ask, “Would you be willing to watch him while we go into town?”
Her eyes widen in surprise that I’m asking her out of everybody else and she asks softly, “Are you sure you trust me to take care of him?”
I nod and say, “Skye, you are a smart and capable young woman. I know you two will have fun hanging out together and that if anything were to happen you would guard him with your life.”
She nods, “I’ll do it.”
“Thank you.”
I get back up and leave to go get ready for our trip to the store to get all the supplies we need to help keep us safe.
Skye
I watch as all of the adults leave the bunker and I feel a ton of pressure to watch of AJ and to keep him safe. After the hatch closes, he looks up at me and says, “So, what now?”
“Well, AJ… what do you want to do?”
“Did you know my daddy?”
I smile remembering Ashton and say, “Yeah, I did. Did you know that before he was your dad, he was mine?”
He tilts his head to the side and his eyebrows furrow and his lips pucker out in confusion and he asks, “You’re my sister?”
I chuckle as I walk to sit down on the couch, “Kind of.”
“Why didn’t mama say that? Why didn’t you live with us?”
Uh oh, I’ve opened a can of worms. I don’t know how to respond, do I just tell him the truth or change the topic, or what?
I’ve been quiet for too long because AJ says, “Hello! Are you going to say anything?”
I chuckle nervously and answer, “Well, whenever I was a kid my mom left.” I didn’t want to tell him about her death. That’s way too gruesome for a five-year-old to hear about. I continue, “When she left, I had no one. I began to train so I could learn how to control my ability.”
He interrupts, “What’s your ability?”
I smirk and show him the little electric shocks I have going through my fingers and he looks at me wide eyed and says, “Whoa.”
I chuckle and say, “Your mom and I just had a connection and she went home and asked your daddy if they could take me in. I lived with them and they treated me like their daughter.”
“If you were like her daughter why didn’t you live with us?”
“Well, after your daddy passed your mommy had a really hard time and she thought that it would be better for me to live with someone with both a mommy and daddy instead of just a mommy so she had me stay here.”
I try not to get teary eyed when I think of how Parker left me. I understand now why she did it, but it still hurts to think about it.
I watch AJ who looks very focused and he asks, “Why did she have you get both mommy and daddy, but I only got mommy?”
“Well, she wanted to take care of you the way she and your daddy always wanted to.”
He nods and asks, “Do you think I should have a daddy?”
“Maybe one day, AJ, when your mommy meets someone nice.”
He perks up and asks enthusiastically, “Like RyRy? I love RyRy and he’s really nice!”
My eyes widen in surprise as AJ begins to ramble on about how much he likes to hang out with Ryan and he turns to me and asks, “Do you think that could happen?”
I mean, anything could happen. But Parker and Ryan are having a hard time just having a friendship right now I can’t imagine them trying to have a relationship.
And yet… I can’t help but think they might just be perfect for one another.
