Myrrolena’s lips peeled back in a snarl, and she actually growled. He held up a hand. ‘Don’t get carried away. I agree, Maslov was a bastard and he had it coming. I might ask why you bashed him over the head instead of sucking the life out of him or something, but the look on your face is answer enough. You lost your temper. I completely understand why smashing him to bits with a heavy object would be more satisfying.’ That disarmed her, a little. She blinked at him. ‘Picture this,’ she said slowly. ‘Every time my circus comes to town, people disappear. Not many people, and nobody anyone would much miss: but sooner or later, someone would notice the pattern. The police, perhaps, or an enthusiastic hobbyist like yourself. I cannot have suspicion falling on my circus.’ She lifted her chin.
