Chapter Five Konrad spent the rest of the afternoon trying to devise some way of sneaking into the Popov house without being detected, either by Popov himself or by his army of crows. He failed. Whatever the purpose of those birds might be, they served as excellent guards. It would take nothing short of an all-out assault on the house’s ghost-guardians to get him inside, and that was hardly the definition of stealth. Towards the end of the afternoon, however, he received word from Nuritov by way of a note. Questioned Popov, it read. Gained little by it, I’m afraid, save more suspicions.
