‘Are you taking me somewhere fancy?’ I examine myself in the dressing room mirror and pour my hair across my back. A sultry red taffeta gown rivers down my legs, splitting open on the left. Beyond the grey curtains, Derek says, ‘I thought you deserved it.’ The silver lights in this particular boutique flood the surfaces like liquid glitter, stunning overhead. My summer tan persists on my skin except at the stark lightness hinted at before the gown’s slit closes. Saying Derek’s seen my tan lines before understates the truth of the matter. He’s licked the border of cream and tan on my thighs and caressed the contrast below my breasts, toeing that line of summer and winter on my body whenever we fall into each other.
