A ring of the bell, followed by two short rings, indicated that the King had arrived at the mudroom entrance to her apartments. The bell rings were code for who was at the door, and she was under strict orders to keep the doors locked at all times, and answer nobody but the king. Her parents had keys for their areas. Eliza stood up, placing her attempted embroidery onto the couch beside her, and made her way down the long hallway. “Who is it?” she asked, as she had been instructed to do so, not even fully trusting the bell signalling. “The King,” Fitz said his voice loud and clear. Eliza unlocked the door, and opened it, allowing him to enter. His arms were filled with white and red roses, a change from the daisies he had previously brought her. She wondered if he had picked to man
