I COULDN’T BELIEVE my ears and could only stare at her in stunned silence. Phalen could have been just as easily asking about the weather.
He chuckled and ruffled her head. “No, of course not, chiquita. You watch too much television.” Still smiling, he looked at me. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. Those guys are assholes and I just didn’t want to take any chances.”
