I wasn’t sure exactly what had happened between my parents. All I knew was what my mother had told me—they’d grown apart. But he remarried a few months later to a younger woman named Jennifer. After retiring from playing football, he became an assistant coach and ended up marrying a cheerleader, a real ditzy one at that. I’d asked my mother if he’d cheated on her before the divorce with Jennifer, but she refused to talk about it.
“Sorry to hear that,” Caden replied, studying my face. “Are you still close with them?”
I shrugged. “I guess I’m closer to my mom. I see my father during the holidays mostly.” I told him about my father remarrying one of the cheerleaders.
He grunted and then muttered, “Doesn’t surprise me.”
