Escaping

Dyann could not believe how much better she was feeling after a few days of spitting out those damn pills. Did it matter anymore what They were? Clearly it was poison. Then the voice was back, “They poisoned us so I could not talk to you.” Dyann felt like she was going crazy but she also felt a connection or bond to this voice. It was like she could feel the emotions of the voice in here head. “I promise, I am more than a voice in your head.  We are 2 beings sharing one body. When we are stronger, I will be able to take over the body Just like you saw with Drake/Sam” Dyann was not sure this was true. Wouldn’t she have known?  Or was this why she was feeling so strong. “Yes. This is why we are feeling so strong because you stopped taking those pills and those like us have incredible strength. They have been giving you pills since you were 4, that’s when they found out we were talking.” Dyann tried to remember. Was it a memory of being little in a room all alone but not feeling alone?  Did she remember having a friend or being part of someone else? It was so vague and fuzzy. “That’s because the pills did not just weaken you, they put me to sleep. They have separated us, made you weak, made your mind fuzzy, and hidden your smell. That’s why our brothers left us. We did not smell right.” Our brothers?  Did she just say our brothers?  The 3 strangers who took Meagan. They were looking for a girl named Cora and believed she was here. “That is correct. You are Cora. I am Rose. We are special.”  Dyann laughed, she sounded so smug.  Rose continued, “they took us because they were servants and wanted to weaken our pack, hurt our family and our people.  When they realized it was a mistake, they ran.  They have been trying to figure out how to use our power to strengthen themselves.” Dyann decided to try responding. “What would happen if we ran?  I have been controlled my whole life. I don’t want a pack and we don’t need another family. Let’s run.” “But I want my pack. Our brothers. Our parents. Our mate.” “Our what?” “Out there somewhere is our mate. Waiting for us. Looking for us. We are old compared to most when they find their mate. Ours is waiting. I can feel it.” “What is a mate?” “Our other half. The one made for us. Our perfect compliment. When we meet instinct will take over. We will not resist our mate. Especially at our age.” “What if I want to resist?  I will not be controlled again. We will be ok on our own. We don’t need anyone.” “But we do.” Dyann blocked Rose out for a while. Rose would learn. Dyann was in control now and would never give it up. Also, she may be a were wolf which is crazy, but she will never be like them. She quickly began packing her few belongings. She took out her hidden phone and texted Jenna. “Leaving tonight. Need to meet for the money. I’m running.” The response was immediate. “Text me when you are out.” Dyann uses an old backpack and thought about how to get out of the house undetected. She could hear the others moving around downstairs. Were they waiting for her to come down and talk?  Could they sense her, hear her, smell her?  She thought about Meagans room. It had a perfect window for accessing the roof. All she had to do was get across the hall. She decided to be her own distraction. She grabbed her dirty dishes and her backpack. As she exited her room she deposited the backpack in Meagans room and continued downstairs.  As she entered the kitchen she noticed it was clean. Wow!  Really?  They finally did some work. As she started washing her own dishes up the whole family made an entrance. Her grandfather was using the same sweet voice from earlier, “have you decided to talk?  I’m sure you have questions.” “No. Actually I think I’d like to wait until tomorrow. Once I go to work and quit, I’ll be back to pack up. We can talk while we are traveling. I do have many questions but I’m trying to organize my thoughts. I am curious why I didn’t know about any of this. How could I be part werewolf and not know it.” Her grandmother answered, her voice thick with curiosity, “So your wolf has not tried to talk to you?” “My wolf?” She managed to laugh. “No.”   She assumed it would be safer for her if they didn’t know about Rose.  The whole family seemed to relax. Daniel spoke up, “Ok. The girl is right. Let her rest. We will explain more tomorrow.” As he finished speaking his phone began to ring and everyone excused themselves. Dyann made her exit and headed straight to Meagans room. She grabbed her bag and headed to the window. Listening intently to a commotion that had started downstairs. Daniel and her grandfather were screaming at each other. Her aunt was wailing and screaming.  Dyann did not wait around to find out what problem had them freaking out. She easily made it off the roof without making a sound and was out of sight of the house in no time. She sent Jenna a text and headed to meet her.  It only took her 15 minutes to get to the spot where Jenna agreed to pick her up. As promised Jenna had the money she had saved, a fresh air card for her phone, snacks, some additional clothes and a box of hair dye. She filled Jenna in on the whole wild story with all of the previously unmentioned details as they drove. Jenna had agreed to drive her 4 hours in any direction giving her a headstart on her “family”.   Jenna listened intently but did not interrupt. She did not question Dyann until she was finished.  When Dyann was done Jenna just smiled and nodded. Finally she said, “That all makes sense.” “How exactly does any of this make sense?” “I didn’t want to tell you, but I got your results again. DNA was more specific. Canis Lupus. Wolf. More specific than canine. Also, the toxicity levels, the metals - it was silver. Known to be poisonous to werewolves.” “Known??  You mean believed to be toxic per myth.” “Well it isn’t myth anymore, is it?  Imagine my BFF is a badass werewolf chick!  Crazy.” “Yeah. Crazy. By the way where are we headed? “ “Well since the cars registered to your brothers are from Maine, I’m thinking East?” “I’m not sure I want to do that. I may be better off on my own.” “Dyann you’ve been alone your whole life. Maybe it’s time for a family.” Before Dyann knew it they were at a bus station and she was hugging Jenna good bye. She promised to update her every 24 hours via text and call as soon as she could. With that she was on a bus headed for anywhere else with Rose telling her “Our  friend is right. We need our family.”
