-Faye-
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like once I took over my father's company. Would the employees stop and stare when they saw me? Waiting for me to run the company into the ground? Thoughts like that scare me. Well.. let's say I got a glimpse of that when I walked into the building today. Walking in the door, every person stopped to look at me. Probably wondering if my father was making the right decision. The question I ask myself daily. I swear you could hear a pen drop in that lobby. I heard the elevator ding, signaling that it was about to leave the floor. I ran to get away from the stares. Barely made it to the door before closing.
Now, an awkward ride to the 60th floor.
*
I walked into the office waiting area as I got off the elevator.
"Hello?" I muttered under my breath. I'm sure no one heard me. My father must have made the announcement this morning, that I will be taking over as CEO by the end of next year of Master Enterprises.
"Hello Miss Masters, how are you this morning?" says Gail, the office receptionist.
I gave her a polite nod as I walked back to my office. I noticed Jordan giving me a nervous grin. Once, I made it down the hall.
“He is in your office."
“Who?" I said.
“Connor Bailey, the hunk that wants you bad." Jordan said with a wink. Jordan is my secretary. But he also keeps me in line.
"Oh.... that's nice. Sometimes I wish he wouldn't wait in my office."
I walked into my office. I saw him sitting in my chair behind my desk. I ignore him and place my cardigan in the closet. I turned to face him, with a smirk. Leaning over, placing my elbows on my desk, framing my white blouse as my long red hair is draped over my shoulder. I caught him eyeing my long gold chain running down my neck and chest.
"Hey eyes up here, What are you doing sitting in my chair?" I said as I walked around to the back of the desk. "We talked about this."
"I know, but I'm still in second command until next year," he says, raising his eyebrows. "I heard the announcement this morning, at the board meeting with your father. I also wanted to give you these in person."
Connor pulls out a huge bouquet of daisies. "I wanted to give my girl these beautiful flowers to make her feel special, on a day like today."
I leaned over to give him a quick peck on the lips. "Thank you but, unnecessary." I said as I bumped him out of my chair. "Now...run along, I'm sure my father has something for you to do."
"Now there, Faye, you have a great day my girl." he says as he walks to the door.
"I'm not your girl, Connor. We messed around once. That doesn't mean anything," I said with a smirk.
He opens the door, mouths the word "Yet!" to me and walks out.
Connor is the type of man that any girl dreams about. He seems perfect, but you never know the real him. Although, he really knows how to make my toes curl. I've never really had feelings for him. I fell for that kind of man all during high school, and they always led me in one direction. One even led me to my deepest secret that no one knows about. Not even my father. That isn't where I would like to go again. I made a vow to myself that I wouldn't do that.
I promised my mother a long time ago too, that I would follow my heart. No matter the consequences. Connor is definitely not following my heart. He is more of a nuisance.
Jordan walks in. "So, what are we doing later?" he asks.
"I don't know. Do you have anything in mind?" I said as I stared at my computer.
"I plan on taking you to the club to celebrate and have dinner." he said with a smirk.
"Okay, that sounds great! Now, can you please get out." I said in a joking tone.
Jordan smiles, as he pulls out his phone and walks out of the room. I know he has something up his sleeve.
* 3 hours later*
I hear a loud ding, startling me. I press the flashing light on my phone. "Yes?" I say into the microphone.
"M-Mr Masters is her-ee to see you." Jordan says with a slight stutter. Jordan has always been terrified of my dad.
"Send him in." I said to Jordan.
I walked around to the front of my desk waiting for my father to enter the room. As he enters, he is wearing his normal gray suit and walks towards me with a smug smile on his face. I waved my hand to my seat at the back of the desk. He took it without hesitation.
"Faye, I have a business trip that I need you to attend." he says straight to the point.
"Oh? What type of merger would I be proposing?"
"I need you to take the plans of our new industrial plant in England, and present them to the board in London. I think this would be a great project for you to get your feet wet. It will show the board that you are serious about taking over as CEO," my father said with a stern smile.
I knew he wasn't asking. He was telling me to go.
"Yes daddy, huh... sir." I said, correcting myself. "When do I need to be in London?"
"You leave in the morning. The tickets will be sent to Jordan within an hour. Also, Connor will be in contact with you at every turn. So, be sure to keep him up to date with the details," he said before standing to leave the office.
"Daddy, wait?" I said, smiling. My father turned with an annoyed look on his face. He hates it when I address him as dad or daddy at the office.
“Thank you!" I say with a bit of excitement. He puts a little smirk on his face and turns to leave.
My father’s and my relationship has never been the same since my mother passed. She was always the passionate one. The person who showed me compassion and a caring attitude. I'm a lot like her, and sometimes I think it pains him to look at me. But, I know he loves me in his own way.
Jordan walked in, distracting me from my thoughts. "So, I guess our plans for tonight are a dud?" he said with a sad look on his face.
"Yes, but I will make it up to you. I need a night out on the town, but this trip is important," I said with a sad smile.
If I'm being honest, I really don't want to do this trip or even take over for my dad's company. It's all I've known for so long. It's what he needs, and it matters to me to keep my dad happy. But, if I do that, I'm sacrificing myself. This trip came at the best time. I'm going to make the best of it.
London here I come!
