The corridor outside Emergency was bright and cold. White walls, hard light, the steady red glow above the operating room doors. It was the only color in the hallway. Sara stopped beneath it. The smell of disinfectant clung to the air. Somewhere nearby a monitor beeped in a slow, steady rhythm. Lily paced in front of the plastic chairs. When she saw Sara, she froze. Fear flickered in her eyes, then vanished under anger. “You finally decided to come," she snapped. “Don't you dare stand there like this isn't on you." Her hand came up, palm already turning. Sara stepped aside. The slap cut through empty air. Lily stared at her own outstretched hand. “What do you think you're doing?" “Copying you," Sara said.
