Chapter Seven: Separation

401 Words
The penthouse was quiet—too quiet. Xander stood in the center of the living room, staring at the empty space where Ella’s shoes once sat near the door. Her perfume lingered faintly in the air, like a ghost refusing to leave. She was gone. And he’d let her walk away. His phone buzzed. A message from Zoe. “She’s staying with me. Don’t come here unless you’re ready to admit what you really feel.” Xander tossed the phone onto the table and walked to the bar. He poured himself a drink but didn’t take a sip. What was he doing? He had everything he thought he wanted—control of Knight Corporation, board approval, a polished reputation. But without Ella… it all felt hollow. Her laughter used to echo through the penthouse. Now there was only silence. And in that silence, he heard everything he’d tried to ignore—every truth, every unspoken emotion, every moment he chose distance over vulnerability. She had been right. She wasn’t just convenient. She was necessary. Not for the contract. Not for the company. For him. ⸻ Meanwhile, across the city, Ella sat on Zoe’s couch with a blanket wrapped around her and eyes red from crying. “I know I shouldn’t care,” she whispered. “But I do.” Zoe sat beside her. “Because you fell for him.” Ella nodded miserably. “I knew what this was. I knew it wasn’t love. But then he’d say things, or touch my hand, or look at me like I meant something. And I let myself believe.” “Maybe you did mean something,” Zoe said gently. “Maybe he’s just too broken to say it.” Ella looked away. “That’s not good enough anymore.” ⸻ Days passed. Neither of them reached out. Xander buried himself in work. Meetings, reports, numbers—anything to drown out the silence at home. But every time he turned around, he saw her. In memories. In echoes. In everything. One night, he stood in the kitchen staring at the mug she always used—the one with a tiny chip in the handle. She used to joke that it matched her: imperfect, but useful. And that was when it hit him. She had never been a pawn in his plan. She had been the heart of his life. And he had broken it.
