In the front seat of the car packed on the highway, Zoey sat upright and lifted her gaze to Gerald. He was not moving an inch from this spot, not unless he’d gotten his answer. She knew it. “Zoey,” Gerald’s voice tumbled out. “Whatever it is you're up to, you can tell me.” “You wouldn't like it,” Zoey answered. She blinked. “If I told you, you wouldn't like it.” Gerald paused, staring her in the eyes. He watched for a few seconds and flinched.
