Neither did I. For once in my life, I felt truly desired, and the sensation was intoxicating. Ferric’s kisses grew more urgent, his hands exploring every inch of me as he pulled me onto his lap, our bodies pressed together in a way that made it impossible to think straight. But just as things were reaching a fever pitch, a loud rustling in the bushes nearby made us both freeze. We pulled apart, our breathing ragged as we turned to see what—or who—had interrupted us. “Holly,” I whispered, dread pooling in my stomach as I saw her step out of the shadows, her green eyes gleaming with malice. She was alone, but the look on her face was enough to send a chill down my spine. “Well, well, well,” she said, her voice dripping with venom as she crossed her arms over her chest. “What do we have here? Little Miss Chubby getting cozy with Ferric? How cute.” Ferric tensed beside me, his arm still around my waist protectively. “Holly, this isn’t what it looks like,” he started, but Holly cut him off with a sharp laugh. “Oh, please,” she sneered, her eyes flicking between us with disdain. “Spare me the excuses. I should have known you’d stoop this low, Ferric. Slumming it with the likes of her? Pathetic. Her words were like a slap to the face, and I felt the familiar sting of humiliation rise up inside me. But before I could say anything, Ferric was on his feet, his face a mask of anger as he glared at Holly. “Back off, Holly,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. “You don’t get to talk to her like that.” Holly’s eyes narrowed, her lips curling into a cruel smile. “Or what? What are you going to do, Ferric? Defend her honor? How romantic.” But Ferric didn’t back down. Instead, he stepped closer to Holly, his eyes blazing with fury. “I’m serious, Holly. You need to leave. Now.” For a moment, Holly just stood there, her eyes locked on Ferric’s, as if daring him to push her further. But then, with a huff of disgust, she turned on her heel and stormed off, muttering something under her breath that I couldn’t quite catch. As soon as she was gone, Ferric turned back to me, his expression softening as he reached out to take my hand. “I’m sorry about that,” he said quietly, his thumb brushing over my knuckles. “She’s… she’s a piece of work.” I nodded, still feeling the sting of Holly’s words, but grateful for Ferric’s support. “Yeah… she is.” He pulled me into his arms, holding me close as the tension slowly ebbed away. “Don’t let her get to you,” he murmured into my hair. “You’re amazing, Zora. Don’t ever forget that.” As I buried my face in his chest, inhaling the comforting scent of him, I realized that for the first time in a long time, I actually believed him As Ferric held me close, the world outside seemed to disappear. His touch was grounding, and his presence was a balm to the emotional wounds that had been opened by Holly’s cruel taunts. I felt a sense of safety in his arms, something I hadn't experienced in a while. After a few moments, Ferric gently pulled back, his hands resting on my shoulders as he looked into my eyes. “Are you okay?” he asked softly, his concern evident in his gaze. I nodded, trying to smile despite the lingering sting of Holly’s words. “Yeah, I’m okay. Thanks to you.” Ferric’s expression softened, and he brushed a stray strand of hair away from my face. “I’m glad you’re okay. I wish I could have done more to stop her, but at least I can be here for you now.” I couldn’t help but be moved by his sincerity. For someone who was often seen as a playboy and troublemaker, Ferric had shown a side of himself that was genuine and caring. “I appreciate it, Ferric. Really. It means a lot.” He smiled, the warmth of his expression making my heart flutter. “You don’t have to thank me. I’m just doing what feels right.” We spent a few more minutes in comfortable silence, the earlier tension replaced by a sense of calm. The sun had nearly set, casting a soft, amber light over the lake and creating a serene atmosphere. He smiled, the warmth of his expression making my heart flutter. “You don’t have to thank me. I’m just doing what feels right.” We spent a few more minutes in comfortable silence, the earlier tension replaced by a sense of calm. The sun had nearly set, casting a soft, amber light over the lake and creating a serene atmosphere. As the light began to fade, Ferric suddenly seemed to have an idea. “How about we make the most of the rest of the evening? There’s a small bonfire area near the lake where we can roast some marshmallows and relax.” The thought of continuing the evening with Ferric, away from the drama and with something as simple and comforting as roasting marshmallows, was irresistible. “That sounds perfect,” I said, my smile growing as I looked at him. He stood up, extending a hand to help me up from the blanket. “Come on, let’s go. I’ve got some marshmallows and chocolate in the basket. As we made our way to the bonfire area, Ferric seemed to lighten up, his playful side coming to the forefront. “I have to warn you,” he said with a grin, “I’m a bit of a marshmallow roasting expert. Prepare to be impressed.” I laughed, feeling a sense of normalcy returning. “Is that so? Well, I’m ready to see your skills in action.” We reached the bonfire area, where Ferric expertly set up a small fire and pulled out the marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate from the basket. He handed me a roasting stick, and we settled down on a nearby log, our knees almost touching as we leaned in to tend to the fire. As the marshmallows began to toast, Ferric and I continued to talk, our conversation shifting from light and humorous to more personal topics. He shared stories from his past, including the challenges he faced growing up in a less affluent part of town and how he had always been underestimated by those around him. “I guess that’s why I find it so easy to connect with you,” Ferric said, his voice thoughtful. “We both know what it’s like to be judged based on things we can’t control.” I nodded, feeling a deep sense of understanding. “Yeah, it’s not easy. But having someone who gets it makes a huge difference.” Ferric reached over and handed me a perfectly roasted marshmallow, its gooey center glistening with a golden hue. “Here you go. One expertly roasted marshmallow, just for you.” I took a bite, the sweetness of the marshmallow and chocolate melting together in a delightful combination. “Delicious,” I said, savoring the treat. “You’re definitely living up to your expert status.” As we continued to roast marshmallows and share stories, I felt the weight of the previous day’s events slowly lifting. Ferric’s presence was a comforting reminder that there were still good things in life, even amidst the chaos. Eventually, as the fire began to die down and the night grew cooler, Ferric stood up and stretched. “I should probably walk you back to your dorm. It’s getting late.”
