CHAPTER 5: The First Crack
POV: Kaelen
“They breached the outer line.”
Darius’s voice still echoes in my head even after he stops speaking.
Everything moves fast after that.
Orders shouted. Guards rushing. The pack shifting from celebration to alert in seconds.
But I don’t move.
I don’t follow him out.
I don’t go to the walls.
I don’t go to the Alpha.
I turn back to her.
Sera.
That is the first crack.
“You’re not going?” Darius snaps.
His voice is sharp now. Urgent.
I don’t look at him.
“They’re not attacking yet,” I say.
“They’re close enough,” he fires back. “We need every fighter.”
“I’ll come.”
“When?”
“In a minute.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Darius steps closer, grabbing my arm again, harder this time.
“This isn’t the time for whatever this is,” he says, his eyes flicking to Sera. “You’re the executioner. Act like it.”
My wolf growls low.
I pull my arm free.
“I said I’ll come.”
Our gazes lock.
A challenge.
A warning.
Then—
He lets go.
But not before he says, quietly,
“If she’s the reason you hesitate… I’ll kill her myself.”
The bond snaps tight.
Pain explodes through me.
Sharp.
Violent.
Sera gasps behind the bars.
Darius doesn’t notice.
Or maybe he does.
But he says nothing more.
He turns and leaves.
Fast.
The door slams shut.
And just like that—
It’s only me and her again.
Always back to this.
Always back to her.
“You should go,” she says.
Her voice is softer now.
Not weak.
Just… different.
I don’t move.
“I came to prepare you,” I say.
“For my death?” she asks.
“Yes.”
A lie.
We both hear it.
I step closer.
The bond tightens instantly.
Familiar now.
Unwelcome.
Real.
“I have questions,” I say.
Her lips curve faintly. “Finally.”
“Answer them.”
“Depends on the question.”
My jaw tightens. “Why are they here?”
She studies me.
Long.
Careful.
Then—
“They’re not here for you,” she says.
“I didn’t ask that.”
“They’re here for me.”
“I know that,” I snap. “Why?”
Silence.
Then—
“Because I matter,” she says.
The words sound simple.
But they aren’t.
Not in the way she says them.
Not in the weight behind them.
“You’re a prisoner,” I say.
Her eyes darken.
“I’m a messenger.”
The word lands heavy.
“What message?” I ask.
She looks at me like I already know the answer.
“Truth.”
My chest tightens again.
“About what?”
She steps forward as much as the chains allow.
Close.
Too close.
“About what really happened fifteen years ago.”
The air shifts.
Cold.
Sharp.
“You keep saying that,” I say. “But you’ve told me nothing.”
“I told you enough.”
“No,” I step closer. “You told me pieces.”
“Because that’s all you can handle right now.”
The words hit.
Hard.
I grip the bars between us.
“Try me.”
Her gaze softens.
Just for a second.
Then hardens again.
“Your family didn’t die because of rogues,” she says.
“I know that,” I snap. “You’ve made that clear.”
“No,” she shakes her head. “You don’t know.”
My chest tightens.
“Then tell me.”
Silence.
Long.
Heavy.
Then—
“They died because they refused to follow him.”
My breath stills.
“Him,” I repeat.
Her eyes hold mine.
“Your Alpha.”
The world tilts.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“He saved me,” I say.
“He used you.”
The words slice through me.
Clean.
Precise.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“Then prove it.”
Another pause.
Then—
She says something that changes everything.
“I was there.”
My heart stops.
“What?”
“I saw it,” she says. “The fire. The blood. The way they fought.”
Her voice drops.
Quieter.
“He didn’t just kill them,” she continues. “He made sure no one survived who could speak against him.”
The dungeon feels smaller.
The walls closer.
“You’re lying,” I say again.
But my voice is weaker now.
Because something—
Something inside me—
Is starting to break.
“Why would I lie?” she asks.
“To save yourself.”
She shakes her head.
“I told you. I’m not trying to save myself.”
“Then what are you trying to do?”
Her eyes soften again.
But this time—
There’s something else there.
Something deeper.
“Save you.”
The bond pulses.
Hard.
Pain and something else.
Something warmer.
Something I don’t want to name.
I step back.
“Stop saying that.”
“Why?” she asks. “Because it’s true?”
“No,” I snap. “Because it’s not your job.”
“Then whose is it?”
Silence.
I don’t have an answer.
Because no one has ever tried to save me before.
I didn’t think I needed it.
Until now.
“Why me?” I ask quietly.
The question slips out before I can stop it.
She stills.
“What?”
“Why not just expose him?” I press. “Why come here? Why risk everything?”
Her gaze drops briefly.
Then lifts again.
“Because you’re the only one who can make them listen.”
The words land heavy.
“Why would they listen to me?”
“Because you’re the one who killed them.”
The truth hits.
Hard.
Brutal.
Real.
My hands tighten into fists.
“I followed orders.”
“And now you have to choose if you keep doing that.”
Silence falls again.
Thick.
Breaking.
The bond tightens.
Not painful this time.
Heavy.
Like a weight pressing down on both of us.
“What if I don’t choose?” I ask.
Her voice is quiet.
Then you lose everything.
The words settle deep.
Too deep.
Before I can respond—
Footsteps echo again.
Fast.
Rushed.
The door slams open.
Lina this time.
Her face pale.
Eyes wide.
“Kaelen,” she gasps. “The Alpha… he—he’s asking for you.”
Of course he is.
I straighten.
“Tell him I’m coming.”
She hesitates.
Then shakes her head.
“No,” she whispers. “He said to bring the prisoner too.”
My blood runs cold.
“What?”
“He wants her in the hall,” Lina says. “Now.”
Sera goes still.
Completely still.
The bond tightens sharply.
Fear.
Not mine.
Hers.
But beneath it—
Something else.
Understanding.
“No,” I say immediately.
Lina flinches. “Kaelen—”
“He said dawn,” I cut in. “Not now.”
“I know,” she whispers. “But something changed.”
Of course it did.
Everything is changing.
Too fast.
Too much.
I turn to Sera.
Her eyes are locked on mine.
Calm again.
Too calm.
“You said dawn,” I say.
“I did.”
“Then why now?”
She exhales slowly.
And for the first time—
She looks uncertain.
“That’s not part of the plan,” she murmurs.
The words hit.
Hard.
“What plan?” I demand.
She freezes.
Too late.
“You have a plan,” I say.
Silence.
Heavy.
Damning.
“Answer me.”
Her lips part.
Then close.
And that is all the answer I need.
The bond tightens again.
But this time—
It’s not pain I feel.
It’s betrayal.
“You used me,” I say quietly.
Her eyes widen. “No—”
“You knew,” I continue. “From the start.”
“I didn’t know about the bond.”
“But you knew about everything else.”
Silence.
That silence again.
Breaking me.
Slowly.
Piece by piece.
Footsteps echo louder behind Lina.
Darius.
And others.
Coming.
No time left.
No space to think.
Only choice.
I look at Sera.
Really look at her.
And for the first time—
I don’t see just the girl in chains.
I see the truth.
The lies.
The danger.
The reason everything is falling apart.
“You’re coming with me,” I say.
Her breath catches.
“To the hall?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes search mine.
For something.
I don’t know what.
Then she nods.
Once.
Slow.
Because she knows—
Whatever happens next—
Nothing will ever be the same again.
And as I unlock the chains—
My hand shaking for the first time in fifteen years—
One thought echoes louder than everything else.
If she’s been lying to me since the beginning—
Then I have no idea what’s waiting for me upstairs.
