WINTER
"Oh, see that" I yelled with food in my mouth.
Suppressing a laugh, Lee shook her head, pointed to her face and whispered, "You've eaten chips all over you like Will."
"Eww, no!"
Miss Kyle's face snapped to mine. "Don't make me repeat myself." She warned.
I bobbed my head and my gaze drifted to Will. His clothes hung loosely and awkwardly on his body. He tripped as we rounded the corner of the zoo, making it his sixth fall.
He stood up, however, Alyssa nudged him with her shoulder which made him flat on his ass again.
Laughter ranged out and I felt embarrassed for him. Yet he needed to stand up for himself too.
Everyone with their partner saves for Lee and me. We were in the Zoo to pick an animal to work on for the project which Miss Kyle had told us was on animals.
I stepped closer to where everyone else was. My stomach decided it was time to embarrass me as It rumbled loud, it was a wonder only Alyssa heard.
"Oh my goodness," Alyssa held her nose with manicured fingers.
"Could you be any grosser? Miss Kyle should have partnered you with Will. You fit each other so well. " She gagged with one hand still on her nose. She dipped the other one in the back pocket of her boyfriend jean, brought out a mouthwash and a packet of gum. Excusing herself, she made a beeline to the restroom.
"Lee!" I whispered.
Lee twisted from Rey's arm she was resting on.
"Care for this?" I raised the banana with me in the air, swinging it.
She shook her head, concentrating on whatever Rey was telling her.
I had successfully, or as I told myself, attempted distracting myself from Rey since yesterday which was going well.
I spotted Kellen near the entrance of the zoo, observing. I didn't need to trace his gaze to know who he was staring at. He glanced away when he noticed me staring at him.
Kellen sauntered to my side making me receive glares from around. I scowled back at them, though I didn't fancy him anyway. The only person I felt for was taken by none other than my best friend.
Someone bumped my shoulder and I almost fell face flat but Kellen caught me on time.
"Are you okay?" He stuttered.
"Oh, I'm fine." I sent Alyssa a withering look as she strolled past me, giggling. She had shoved me on purpose.
"Oh, Kellen is so hot you can't help but swoon!" "Thank goodness he caught you or else, your pretty face won't be so pretty anymore." Alyssa pouted, cackling at the same time.
"Yeah." Kellen lifted me and he stepped back. I flipped a stray strand of my hair out of my face and drew closer to Alyssa.
"Ignore her," Kellen murmured. Whilst restraining me, he sent Alyssa a dirty look.
She giggled, blinking her eyes innocently.
My stomach rumbled again and Kellen put up an eyebrow.
"I doubt you are a girl at all." He shook his head, Laughing.
"Not all girls need to be prim and proper like Alyssa and Lee." I asserted, searching my backpack for the banana I had offered Lee earlier.
It wasn't there. I searched for loopholes and cuts in my backpack but there were none. It must have fallen off somewhere, I mused.
Excusing myself, I retraced my steps to where Alyssa slammed into me.
As I got to the exact spot, I saw Alyssa extending a banana that seemed awfully like mine to Lee. She accepted it with a smile, peeled it and brought it to her lips. She took a bite, munching slowly on it.
I hurried closer to ask Alyssa where she had gotten it from when I noticed how still Lee was.
"Lee?"
I got no reply as she fell to the ground. Her body jerked and trembled. I froze, my mouth opened agape as I stared at her. Snapping out of my dazed moment, I ran to her side and knelt beside her.
She wheezed, her skin turning pale. I had been with her long enough to know what was transpiring.
I did the only thing that came to my mind at that moment. "Rey, Kellen, Help!"
In no time, my foot slapped on the sidewalk, near where I was.
"What happened?" Miss Kyle implored as she approached us first.
"She fell." Tears slipped down my cheeks into my mouth.
"Is she asthmatic?" Someone from the crowd asked.
"Come on, give her breathing space!" Miss Kyle ordered, shooing the students coming nigher away.
" She has allergies!" I whimpered.
"To what?" Mrs Kyle asked.
"Peanut butter," I affirmed.
Mrs Kyle picked the discarded banana and sniffed it. I collected it from her to smell it too.
My hand touched a sticky substance on it, I brought it to my nose and inhaled. Peanut Butter.
"Who gave her this?" Miss Kyle pointed to the banana with me.
"A.." I began but was cut off.
"Winter," Alyssa lied, sniffing. She walked inside the crowd that had formed a circle around us, dabbing at her eyes.
"What?" My eyes narrowed at her.
"You did it. I was here remember!" She accused, fake tears sliding down her cheeks.
Standing up, I clasped her hands in mine and shook her but it made her shed whatever had been in her eyes. I was the only one entitled to the information about her allergies. I was surprised as to how Alyssa got to know.
Everyone's eyes burned into mine.
"I own the banana but I swear, I didn't give It to her. Lee is my best friend and I wouldn't want to hurt her. "
"I believe you," Kellen said, backing me up. He tried helping me up but I slapped his hands away.
"Someone should please help her." I pointed to Lee who had not stopped gasping.
Remembering she always went about with her medications in her backpack, I scrambled to Rey since we came in his car. "Car keys. "
"Why?" He uncrossed his arms, stuck them in his jeans pocket.
"Your car keys!" I grounded my teeth together.
"It's not loc..."
I scrambled to the lot, not waiting for him to finish his sentence. I swung the door open, yanked Lee's bag off his seat and fished out the epinephrine injection.
I zoomed back there in record time. With shaky hands, I opened the injection. A hand halted me as I was about to administer it.
"You are shaky and shouldn't be administering the injection." Miss Kyle said.
"I can do it. My mom is a doctor." Kellen offered, taking it from me.
"Someone should grab her to my car. Thankfully, the clinic is nearby. " Miss Kyle declared after Kellen was done.
Rey, despite quiet, did the job by carrying her bridal style. He strode to Miss Kyle's car and I trotted after him.
He laid her on the back seat whilst I sat shotgun as Miss Kyle stepped in.
My hands went to Lee's, It was cold but colours were seeping back into her face gradually.
We got to the hospital in ten minutes. I supported Miss Kyle to move her into the clinic. The nurses took over and I sat in the reception area whilst Miss Kyle went to talk to the doctor and went back to her car after assuring me she would be alright.
I knew she would be since the treatment had been given to her immediately. The problem was, seeing her in that state always scared me shitless.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
"Thank goodness, you're awake," I said, letting out a sigh.
I had been in the clinic for six hours now, staring at the white paints on the wall and patients trooping in and out. Lee's parents had been informed but they were still not here as their flight was delayed.
"I feel weird. " Lee said, rubbing at her temple. "What happened?"
"Allergic reaction," I said.
"Apparently the banana, Alyssa offered you, was coated with peanut butter. "
"Isn't the banana yours?" She asked and I nodded.
"No one knows I have peanut allergies except you." Her brows furrowed and her searching gaze met her.
"I wouldn't do that to you, babe. What would be my aim anyway?" I pointed out.
You aimed to snatch Rey, my crazy subconscious whispered.
My plans to distract myself were working fine until Alyssa devises a plan of her own with my food.
Most people thought I was jealous of Lee, I mean everyone as I heard them talking not so discreetly on my way to Miss Kyle's car. The only people that believed me was Kellen since I had been with him, Miss Kyle and probably Rey too. But he showed no sign of believing me or emotion like he was interested in whatever was happening.
"Okay, I believe you but who would do that?"
"Alyssa."
"Why?"
"Probably because of Rey. You know she promised if she can't get him, no one would." I prompted.
"I see, two can play at that game. " Lee said, coming down from the bed. "I would make her rue the day she was born for doing this to me."
I giggled as I loved seeing her in action. It made her fierce instead of the calm she exhibited.
The doctor came in as we were about to leave. A hot man of about forty years of age. He was six feet, had a broad shoulder which was accentuated in the white coat he wore. A cute smile graced his lips as he stared at us.
If all doctors were as hot as him, I would feign getting sick every day just to stare at them.
"Hello," he looked at the joypad with him, "Miss Simms,"
"Hi," Lee answered back with a smile of her own. She pinched me as I was smiling dreamingly at him.
"Lee!"
She nodded at the doctor. He laughed, shaking his head.
"How are you feeling?" He placed a stethoscope on her chest.
"Save for slight headaches that I'm feeling, I'm good."
He nodded whilst writing.
"Can I go home now?" Lee chews on her bottom lips, looking at the doctor with big green eyes.
"Certainly dear but you'll come with me for some medications to help improve your immune system." The doctor grinned, assuring Lee as she anticipated going home.
I waited in the reception area once again as Lee went in for her medication. She came back some minutes later with a white plastic bag in her hand.
"Receptionists are just too phoney," Lee said as we walked past one glaring at us discretely whilst smiling at a young man in a scrub. Probably another doctor or a nurse.
"I thought I was the only one who noticed it," I mumbled.
"Even the receptionist was kinda bitchy." Lee tsked.
"Here they come. " A hushed voice said. Turning, I saw a nurse standing close by whispering to another. They sneered as my gaze caught theirs.
"They are probably jealous of how we look. I mean look at them." I nodded at one with a long face and horse teeth. Lee giggled out loud drawing their attention the more. Their gazes stuck on us till we stepped out.
"If a look could kill, we should be dead by now," Lee said, cracking up as soon as we stepped out.
"Totally. " I nodded.
"Hey,"
"Hi." Lee and I said simultaneously to Kellen.
"Are you alright?"
A blush appeared on Lee's face as Kellen doted on her.
"I'm fine. Thanks for waiting behind. " Lee said. Her eyes moved from Rey to Kellen.
"It's no big deal." Rey lifted his shoulder whilst entering his car.
"Shotgun!" I pushed Kellen and Lee out of my way.
"Where you sit doesn't matter as you'll still feel sick. " Lee pointed out.
"I know but I prefer the front view. At least, I get to rest all my body on a seat." I demonstrated by pushing the seat backwards, careful not to discomfit anyone as I rested my body on it.
"Yeah, whatevs."
"Yeah, whatevs." I mimicked Lee earning a swipe at the back of my hair.
"Children, children, " Kellen said, lifting his index finger to his lips.
The rest of the ride to our various homes was in silence. Mine was the last stop. As I came down from the car, I stretched my body before walking in. My phone beeped, a message from Rey flashed on the screen as I unlocked it.
First Project on Saturday, at noon at my house.
Rey could say this with his mouth but he decided to text. Besides, Saturday was in four days, meaning too far for me to be reminded today.
He had been acting moody all day. His appearance too depicts his moodiness. His hair was in disarray but sexy on him. He had left three buttons of his shirt undone. Also, his jeans were more ripped than I normally saw him with.
He didn't even ask his girlfriend if she was fine. It wasn't any of my business though but I was concerned to know what was wrong with him. I wanted to know as he was my friend now. I know very soon I would get to the core of his mysterious side.
