"Flour, "
"Checked," I replied as Lee listed what was available for the cookies we desire to make for the sleepover.
Lee put some flour into a bowl, added butter and sugar. I watched as she mixed it. Dipping my thumb into the bowl, I took some of the batters, slipping them into my mouth.
"This tastes better than the others we made," I said, licking my finger as we finished mixing the third ingredient for the cookies.
Lee grinned, taking the compliment.
Unlike I, Lee had won several awards in baking competitions since she clocked eighth. Eight years old, I was enrolled in singing lessons and ballet classes instead.
The kitchen now looked like a mess since I was in charge. My presence alone invoked disorderliness in kitchens. The bottom line was I couldn't cook to even save my own life.
We sang nursery rhymes as we baked the last batch of cookies. Then I switched to my, I mean our all-time favourite by Demi Lovato, "This is me."
I felt Lee's gaze on me as I sang and danced to it. She clapped when I belted the last tone.
"Why didn't you enrol for the theatre audition?"
The theatre audition is a place for people that are aspiring or talented in singing, acting, dancing, or other performance to show their God's given talent which will enable them to obtain a spot a fully-funded scholarship into Rosewood- only for those that would desire to go into performing art.
"Can't sing in a crowded place," I mumbled.
The mere thought of singing in a large crowd appals me. I didn't audition for anything even when I knew I could sing better than most of the contestants. My parents had always helped me when I was young to overcome fear. Their presence alone alleviates it.
I rested my hands on the kitchen counter, sighing.
"Lemonade or Chapman?"
"Chapman," I replied since it was my favourite. We always ended up with the two anyway since Lee preferred Lemonade to Chapman.
"Stop wasting your talent. You could get the scholarship you desired."
"You don't know if I'll win, besides I have the project as an alternative." I pointed out, shrugging.
"Yes, I know. However, there's no harm in trying." Lee brought out a stool and stood on it to reach the ingredients for the drink.
I always complain of my being short but Lee was shorter by two inches. I laughed at her attempt to reach for a large container at the top cabinet.
"I'm glad I could amuse you." She said with a fake glare on her face.
"You don't have to look at anyone. I'll be there and you can look at me." She jumped down, setting a large container containing flavours on the table.
"No."
"Yes, "
"No."
"Pretty please, " She gave me the Lee look- Sniffing, her green eyes widened brimming with tears and lips pushed out- She always does that to get her way.
"Fine, and don't do that again." I wiggled my index finger at her face.
"Thank you, thank you." We giggled, hugging my side.
We tidied the messed up kitchen and went ahead to set up the living room.
Lee's living room was by far bigger than mine. At least three of mine. It could accommodate a maximum of 20 people for social distance and a maximum of fifty if there was none. The wallpaper was in cream and brown colour and It consists of a fifty-two inches flat-screen TV, three black couches and a coffee table in the middle. Though it was extravagant, it also looked homey.
The alarm went off at exactly 9 P.M. After we freshen up. I wore one of my favourite Lee's pyjamas bottoms with the tank top I donned on earlier. We spent thirty more minutes deciding on what to watch. We later went with "To all the boys I've loved before."
"I wish I could shag someone as Peter K," Lee murmured.
"I wish for someone like Rey to be my boyfriend," I said, muttering the last part to myself.
"You and Rey have been close these two days you started talking. Is there anything I should know?" Lee sat up straight, raising her brows. She grabbed a cookie from the bowl, bit on it and washed it down with her lemonade juice.
"Nothing is between us. We are just friends."
"It's weird you are friends now whereas you were in school four years ago without him noticing. Anyway, I believe nothing is going on between you." She smiled lying down back on the sleeping bag.
"You were supposed to tell me something juicy now, " I said, changing the topic as the mood was starting to get awkward since the mention of Rey.
"Oh, yeah." She sat up straight, propping her chin with her left hand. "One of the cheerleaders is sick and we need someone to fill in. Like you are the only one I could think of that would fit that spot perfectly. "
"What position?"
"A flyer. "
My eyes widened, they were finally offering me a spot of popularity. Also, my desired position at it. I had always wanted to be a cheerleader and a flyer. Music wasn't the only thing I was skilled in, It was one of my many talents. The thrills of sailing in the air-filled me but my smile broke away as the thought of Alyssa came to my mind. She would make that plan futile.
"Alyssa agreed to it. She has no choice anyway." Lee prompted as if reading my mind.
My heart leapt with joy once more. She has no choice except she enjoys failure and that was one thing she detested.
"I would be glad to join you. " I squealed. "I have wanted this for so long. "
"I know right. Also, you'll get to attend all the parties hosted without anyone asking you for an invite. " Lee clutched my hand and we squealed.
The perks of being popular in Sunnyville. The popular kids were even treated better than most of the teachers. The downside of it was I get to see Rey and Lee snuggle all the time.
It wasn't fair.
The world was not fair.
Why couldn't I get everything I wished for?
Lee had everything which included wealthy parents, a better house and she even has a car. She didn't even know how to operate it.
I, on the other hand, practised with Hailey's truck and would get a license when I turned eighteen. Yet, I didn't have a car to use.
At least I should be the one with Rey, not her.
Though no rule stated who should be with whom, I wished I could create one.
"Night, babes." Lee yawned, snuggling into her sleeping bag and hugging a throw pillow to her body.
She even got to have a good night's rest whereas I tossed and turned before any sleep could come.
"Night." I laid awake for some minutes until I eventually drifted off.
