Chapter Sixteen
For quite some time, Samantha had gone along with Gordon’s plan. She and Ella resided in Stockholm and spent the last two months between Samantha’s work and taking trips around the city. Ella was particularly fond of the Djurgårdsslätten because she got to see so many Nordic animals. Samantha took a great deal of pleasure in making the people in animal costumes perform the most elaborate tricks for her daughter’s entertainment. They went there so frequently that the attendants knew them by name, and had to be told by their manager that the spell was not to be broken for the child and that they had to stop running away from the guests.
However, despite these happy moments, Samantha found the place oppressive. Gordon had been good at studiously avoiding her during work hour
