Chapter 10

Christopher POV: The tires of my Aston Martin skidded across the muddy gravel, bringing us to a halt outside my secluded cabin deep in the northern pines. Outside, the storm raged violently, rain hammering against the roof in deafening sheets. On the dashboard screen, my encrypted comms radio crackled with static—Julian Vance's private security force was sweeping the university perimeter, setting up roadblocks across the county. We had escaped the Gala with the ledger, but Julian was still free, armed with billions of dollars and a syndicate of ruthless men who would stop at nothing to eliminate us before sunrise. I turned off the ignition. In the dim amber light of the console, August sat in the passenger seat, her breathing shallow and ragged. Her red silk dress was torn at the hem, her dark hair tangled, and she clutched the dark leather ledger against her ribs like a weapon. "Are they behind us?" she whispered, her dark eyes wide as she looked at me in the shadows. "Not yet," I murmured, my voice rough from smoke and adrenaline. "My safehouse is off the grid. They won't find us tonight, August." She let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders finally dropping. "We didn't kill the Order tonight, did we? Julian... he's going to hunt us." "Let him try," I growled low, my thumb reaching out to trace the trembling line of her jaw. "Tonight, you are safe with me." August leaned into my touch, closing her eyes as her warm lips pressed a soft, desperate kiss against my palm. The simple, raw surrender in that gesture shattered the last edge of my composure. I carried her across the threshold, locking the heavy timber door behind us and shutting out the freezing darkness. The cabin was pitch-black save for the distant flashes of lightning through the high windows. The air was thick with the scent of pine, cedar, and the overwhelming, intoxicating warmth of August's skin. I backed her against the rough wooden door, my body coming down flush against hers, trapping her completely in my shadow. "Christopher..." she gasped, her hands immediately flying up to clutch at my shoulders, her fingers tangling into my damp hair to pull my face down to hers. "I have spent seven years fighting ghosts, August," I rasped against her lips, my mouth taking hers in a fierce, possessive kiss that tasted of rain, iron, and electric heat. "I thought I was dead inside. Until you." She let out a quiet, trembling moan into my mouth, her hips arching up instinctively into mine. I didn't wait. My hands hooked into the thin silk straps of her backless dress, yanking them down. The red silk gave way with a soft tear, pooling around her waist and exposing the flawless, pale curves of her body to the cool cabin air. A violent shudder ran through her as my warm, rough hands cupped her waist, pulling her bare chest flush against my unbuttoned shirt. Her fingers dug into my back, tracing the hard muscles of my shoulders as she pulled me closer, her kiss becoming wild, demanding, and completely uninhibited. "No more hiding," she whispered desperately into my neck, her teeth lightly catching my pulse point, making a dark growl rumble deep in my chest. "Touch me, Christopher. Make me forget them." "You will never have to fear them again," I growled, lifting her effortlessly into my arms. Her legs wrapped tightly around my hips as I carried her to the broad leather sofa in front of the stone hearth. I laid her down, coming over her like an eclipse, my golden eyes locked onto hers as I stripped away the last remaining barriers between us. In the faint, flickering light of the storm, she was breathtaking. Her skin glowed like warm ivory, her chest rising and falling in shallow, desperate pants as I settled between her parted thighs. "Look at me, August," I commanded in a rough purr, my hand sliding down her flat stomach, my fingers finding the hot, slick center of her heat. She gasped loudly, her back arching off the leather cushions as a high-pitched cry tore from her throat. Her hands gripped my forearms, her nails digging into my skin as my thumb set a slow, merciless rhythm against her most sensitive flesh. "Christopher—please—" she choked out, her thighs trembling against my sides. "Don't tease me... I need you." "Say it," I rasped, dipping my head to trail biting kisses down her collarbone, my mouth sliding down to cup the firm swell of her breast while my hand drove her relentlessly toward the edge. "Tell me who you belong to." "You," she cried out, her eyes glazed with pure, dark pleasure as her hips rolled frantically up into my touch. "I'm yours, Christopher! Only yours!" I drove into her in one long, heavy stroke, filling her completely to the hilt. August threw her head back with a breathless, piercing moan as her tight, scalding walls stretched around me. I froze, my eyes slamming shut as a primal shudder racked my entire body at the sheer perfection of her tight entrance gripping me. "f**k, August..." I swore under my breath, my hands gripping her hips tightly. "Move," she begged, her arms wrapping tight around my neck, pulling my mouth down to hers. "Christopher, move!" I set a deep, punishing pace, driving into her again and again until the leather creaked beneath us and the quiet cabin filled with the frantic sounds of skin meeting skin and her uninhibited moans. She met every thrust with a fierce, defiant passion, her legs locked around my waist, pulling me deeper into her core. Her climax hit her hard and fast. Her body went rigid, her inner walls convulsing frantically around my length as she called my name like a prayer. The sight of her shattering beneath me snapped my final thread of control—I buried myself deep inside her one last time, letting out a low, primal roar as my own release spilled hard and hot within her. Hours later, the rain had settled into a steady, quiet rhythm against the glass. August lay fast asleep on my chest, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, her dark hair spread across my shoulder. Her breathing was slow and even, her small hand resting over my beating heart. On the table beside the sofa, the heavy leather ledger sat in the dark. I looked down at the girl resting in my arms, my hand gently stroking her soft back. Julian Vance still had his money, his guards, and his power. The war was far from over, and tomorrow, the hunt would resume with double the ferocity. But as I pulled August closer against my chest, a dark, lethal smile touched my lips. Let them come. I had the evidence, I had the vengeance... and I had the one thing worth burning the world to protect.
