CHAPTER TEN
Emily's eyes scanned the room, searching for any possible means of escape. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was determined to try. She would not be trapped forever.
As she walked over to the window, she noticed that it was slightly ajar. A small breeze rustled the curtains, and Emily's heart skipped a beat. Could this be her chance to escape?
She pushed the window open wider and looked out. The drop to the ground was significant, but Emily was determined. She knew she had to try.
Just as she was about to climb out, she heard a noise behind her. She turned to see one of the maids standing in the doorway, a look of surprise on her face.
"My lady, what are you doing?" the maid asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Emily hesitated, unsure of what to say. But something about the maid's expression told her that she could trust her.
"I'm trying to escape," Emily said, I have to get out of here before it's too late."
The maid's eyes widened in understanding, and she nodded. "I can help you," she said. "But you have to be careful. The king's guards are everywhere."
Emily's heart skipped a beat. "How can you help me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The maid hesitated, looking around nervously. "My name is Sarah," she said. "I've been working in the castle for years. I've seen the way the king treats the servants, and I don't want to see you suffer the same fate."
Emily's eyes filled with tears. "Thank you," she said, her voice shaking.
Sarah nodded. "I'll help you escape, but you have to trust me. Can you do that?"
Emily nodded, determination filling her. "I trust you," she said.
Sarah smiled, and for a moment, Emily saw a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could escape the king's clutches after all.
"Okay, here's the plan," Sarah said, her voice low and urgent. "I'll sneak you out of the castle through the kitchen. But you have to be quick and quiet. The guards change shifts in a few minutes, and we don't want to get caught."
Emily nodded, her heart racing with excitement. She was going to escape. She was going to be free.
With Sarah's help, Emily made her way to the kitchen, her heart pounding in her chest. They moved quickly and quietly, avoiding the guards and the other servants.
As they reached the kitchen door, Sarah turned to Emily and handed her a small bag. "Take this," she said. "It's some food and water. You'll need it where you're going."
Emily took the bag, her eyes filling with tears. "Thank you," she said, her voice shaking.
Sarah smiled and pushed open the door. "Go," she said. "And don't look back."
Emily took a deep breath and stepped out into the night, the cool air hitting her like a slap in the face. She looked around, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. She was outside the castle walls, and she was free.
But as she looked back at the castle, Emily knew she wasn't safe yet. The king would stop at nothing to catch her, and she had to keep moving. She took a deep breath and started to run, the darkness swallowing her whole.
As Emily ran through the darkness, she could hear the king's guards closing in. She knew she couldn't keep running forever. Just when she thought she was going to collapse from exhaustion, she saw a horse and rider approaching.
It was Lady Victoria, and she reined in her horse beside Emily. "Get on," she said, her voice low and urgent. "I'll help you escape."
Emily hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether she could trust Lady Victoria. But the woman's expression was serious, and Emily knew she had no other choice. She swung up onto the horse behind Lady Victoria, and they galloped off into the night.
But as they rode, Emily began to feel a sense of unease. Lady Victoria's expression had changed, and she seemed to be enjoying Emily's predicament.
"Where are we going?" Emily asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Lady Victoria laughed. "I'm dropping you off on the road," she said. "You're on your own now."
The horse slowed to a stop, and Lady Victoria pushed Emily off the horse. Emily landed hard on the ground, skinning her knee. As she looked up, she saw Lady Victoria's face twisted in a cruel smile.
"Good luck, Emily," Lady Victoria said, before turning her horse and riding away.
Emily watched her go, feeling a sense of despair wash over her. She was alone, and she had no idea where she was. As she stood up, brushing herself off, she heard the sound of horse hooves approaching. But it wasn't Lady Victoria returning.
A man rode up on a horse, his eyes scanning Emily's body. "Well, well, well," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "What do we have here?" He touched her legs before he could do anything else Galloping of the horse came in view.
The king rode up on his horse, his face twisted in anger. "You dare to touch her?" he thundered, his voice echoing through the night air.
The man who had attacked Emily cowered on the ground, begging for mercy. The king dismounted his horse and strode over to him, his eyes blazing with fury.
"You will pay for your transgressions," the king growled, his voice low and menacing.
With a swift motion, the king drew his sword and struck down the man. Emily watched in shock as the man lay motionless on the ground.
The king turned to Emily, his expression softening as he saw the fear in her eyes. "Are you harmed?" he asked, his voice gentle.
Emily shook her head, still in shock. The king sheathed his sword and approached her, his eyes scanning her body for any signs of injury.
"I'm fine," Emily said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The king nodded, his expression still tense with anger. "You will not be harmed again," he vowed. "You are under my protection now."
He helped Emily onto his horse and mounted behind her, wrapping his arms around her to hold her close. As they rode back to the castle, Emily felt a mix of emotions: relief, gratitude, and confusion. What did the king's actions mean? And what would happen to her now?
