Chapter 2

Lin Yu found herself trapped in a strange place. Slowly lifting her right hand, she stared at the crescent-shaped mark that had appeared on her palm. Her gaze was complicated—uncertain, more than anything, confused. This place had nothing, except for a small pond made of piled-up stones. In the middle of the pond was a grayish-white stalagmite, and drops of water were slowly dripping from its top into the pool. The pond was not large, but it had accumulated quite a bit of water. Having been trapped for so long, Lin Yu was incredibly thirsty. She couldn’t hold herself back and took a sip of the water. The water tasted sweet and refreshing, soothing her throat. But before she could take another sip, her vision darkened, and she fell into a deep sleep. "Mom, save me! I don’t want to marry Xu Mo! The Xu family won’t let me go; they’ll kill me!" Lin Yu faintly heard Lin Yiqian’s frantic screams as she drifted in and out of consciousness. Xu Mo? Xu family? A sudden realization flashed through Lin Yu’s mind, and she opened her eyes. The sharp, high-pitched screams disappeared, and what appeared in front of her was the familiar ceiling. It wasn’t the place that had trapped her earlier. This was her room in the Lin family’s home. Lin Yu’s confusion deepened. Her first instinct was to look at her right palm. To her surprise, the crescent-shaped mark was still there. A hallucination? Lin Yu closed her eyes and waited for a moment. "Yiqian! Why did you provoke Xu Mo? Do you even know who he is and what the Xu family’s status is? Why can’t you think clearly and keep going down this path? Now look at what you've done. How are we supposed to help you?" The voice was Sun Wanting's, filled with deep sorrow, mixed with helplessness and anxiety. Opening her eyes again, the crescent mark was still there. But what shocked Lin Yu was... she thought she had heard something. Was that Sun Wanting speaking? But why had it suddenly gone silent? She shook her head uncertainly, trying to close her eyes again. "I really love Xu Mo! How could you not even look at me? I... I know I was wrong..." Lin Yiqian couldn’t hold back her fear and began crying. What should she do? She had caused Xu Mo to be in a coma, and the Xu family would surely t*****e her to death! "You’ve made up your mind not to marry Xu Mo? Do you know what kind of mess you’ve created? The Xu family had pressured Boyang! Boyang is going down, it's over!" Lin Hongxin shouted angrily. "I’m not marrying him! He’s a vegetable now. What’s the point? Am I supposed to keep a living corpse?" Lin Yiqian loved Xu Mo before the accident, not the person lying motionless in bed now! Hearing this, Lin Yu opened her eyes again, unwilling to give up. As before, the voices vanished, as though everything had been her imagination. But Lin Yu was sure that what she just heard had really happened seven years ago. Could it be that staying in the mental asylum for so long had made her go mad? A wave of unease rose in her chest. Lin Yu sat up from the bed and stood up. There was a calendar on the desk, and the date displayed was seven years ago. Seven years ago, Lin Yu was 22 and still unmarried. Seven years ago, she was a college student full of dreams for the future, and her grandfather had just passed away. Seven years ago, Lin Yu hadn’t torn apart her relationship with Lin Hongxin and his wife, and she was still the princess in her family, loved and pampered by all... For a moment, Lin Yu thought she was seeing an illusion. She was having a beautiful dream of reliving her past. But the next second, she woke up. She hadn’t really gone mad. Even if the whole world didn’t believe her, even if they all thought she was insane, she would never let herself be assimilated! Taking the phone on the desk, Lin Yu’s eyes lingered on the date July 4th for a long time, before walking toward the bathroom. The girl in the mirror was still young, her slightly immature face free of the madness and breakdown she would have in seven years. It was fresh and beautiful. July 4th, only three days until July 7th. Three days from now, she will marry Zhou Quan and begin seven years of nightmare. A surge of hatred suddenly rose within Lin Yu. Without realizing it, she clenched her fists. Then, from her right palm... a thin stream of water began to flow! What was this? Terrified, Lin Yu stared at the water flowing from her hand, her eyes filled with struggle. Finally, she closed her eyes and bravely drank a sip. "Fine, if I won’t marry, then let Xiao Yu marry!" Sun Wanting’s voice was full of malicious intent, no longer as loving as usual. "Why are you saying that? Xiao Yu is marrying Zhou Quan soon. She can agree..." Lin Hongxin’s roar abruptly stopped, and he looked at Sun Wanting in disbelief. "Do you think it’s okay? We only have two daughters. If she doesn’t marry, should we really force Yiqian to marry? I won’t agree to that!" Sun Wanting said forcefully, without room for negotiation. "Fine! Let Xiao Yu marry. When she wakes up, let’s talk to her about it. Remember, talk nicely and don’t mess it up!" Lin Hongxin sighed, quickly changing his mind. His compromise was so quick that no one would believe he hadn't been planning this beforehand. Still hearing the voices clearly in her ears, Lin Yu tasted the same sweetness from the pool water she had drunk earlier. A thought suddenly crossed her mind. Could it be... that the crescent-shaped mark was connected to that strange place? Curious, Lin Yu pinched the mark on her hand. Immediately, the flow of water stopped, as though nothing had happened. Was it really that simple? Lin Yu pressed the crescent mark again, and it didn’t respond. She pinched it harder, feeling pain, and the water started flowing again, but much smaller than before. After trying a few times, Lin Yu was certain that the more pain she felt, the stronger the water flowed. If there was no pain, or only a slight sting, no water flowed. Gazing at her wet right hand, Lin Yu slowly lifted her head, stared at her reflection in the mirror for a moment, and lightly curved her lips. She opened the wardrobe, ignored the clothes in pink and bright colors, and chose a black dress to wear. No matter how she ended up here, the next step would be her battlefield!
