Ch4
The screams of people dying. the fire and the pain in my chest. I don't know where I am but I'm scared. What is going on? I can't breathe. Am I dying?
I shot up in the bed, heart racing, my whole body was sweaty. It was just a dream. It was just a dream. What can you feel? What can you see? What can you smell? What can you hear? Deep breaths. You are safe, it was just a dream.
I went through this almost every morning. That nightmare always seems so real. My therapist assured me that it was not. There was no wolf coming to get me. I was not burned alive. I was living and breathing in the real world.
"It happened again didn't it?" My roommate Kat asked while she was standing at my door.
"Yeah, how did you know?"
" I could hear you whimpering from my room."
"What time is it?" I asked, I had this idea but I didn't want to say anything yet.
"It's five twenty as usual." She answered back with all the sarcasm she could muster. Yeah this was becoming a normal thing again.
"Come on get your but up so we can be there for Sarah. You know, her nightmare is the worst of all three of us."
"Yeah I know, I'm coming." She needed us there to reassure her that she wasn't really on fire and she still had her eyes and nobody had plunged a knife into her heart. Whatever had really happened to us she had gotten the worst of it. Kat never talks about her nightmare but I have a feeling it's the reason she doesn't like being touched or being in crowded places.
We met in the recovery garden of the hospital. We giggled at the fact that we had a similar white strip of hair in our heads. What a coincidence right but then we started to realize we had a lot in common. All three of us were found wandering the outskirts of town. All of us looked like we had been in the fight for our life yet none of us had any memory. Nothing before waking up in the hospital, not even our own names. So we just went by what the hospital told us our names were based on the only answer they could get from us in our incoherent state.
"Can you tell us your name?"
Crazy right but we don't even remember anyone asking that.
Shaking my head I got out of bed and went to the bathroom to wash my face. I looked at myself in the mirror as I started to cut off the water. There was a loud scream coming from Sarah's room causing the mirror to shatter.
That's knew something must be horrible wrong…
"Pam, get in here now!" Kate yelled from Sarah's room. I ran as fast as I could.
"What the h**l is going on here?" I manage to say before stopping dead in my tracks. What the h**l was an understatement. She was hovering above her bed. Her mouth stuck in a silent scream.
"Get your a** over here. She is burning up." Kat yells, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"What the h**l do we do? Should we call for help?" Kat's normal straight forward attitude was gone. I could tell she was panicking.
"We have no time for all that we need to get her in an ice bath now."
"A ice bath? And how in the h**l are we supposed to get her there? She is at least two feet off the bed."
" I don't know but we have to do something." I told her. My mind was working overtime on how to get her across the hall fast.
" No dip Sherlock." Kate retorts back to me.
All of sudden her eyes opened and a bright white light started to glow from them. It was getting brighter and brighter and me and Kate had to shield our eyes. There is another scream from her then everything is black.
"Kate! SARAH!" I tried to turn on the lights but nothing happened. I feel my way back to my room for my phone. I turn on the flashlight and make my way back calling Kate and Sarah's name hoping someone would say something.
"Sh*t Sarah. What the h**l was that?" I could hear Kate talking to Sarah.
" I don't know." Sarah finally responds.
" Why is it so dark in here? Can someone turn on the lights? I don't like the dark." Sarah's soft child-like voice said. You could tell she was holding back tears and a panic attack.
" I'm coming with a flashlight." I yell as I come into the room.
"Sarah, I think you blew the circuit breaker for the whole building." Kate says with a chuckle.
" I second that." I laugh trying to cheer her up.
" How are you feeling?" I ask while checking to see if she was still feverish.
" I'm fine. Better than I have felt in a long time. What happened?"
"We were going to ask you that." Kate says crossing her arms like the over protective big sister she acts like.
"I don't know, it's all foggy. It was my normal nightmare but this time I felt stronger. When I yelled stop I felt this surge of energy and then this bright light shot out my hands." My mind has gone blank. I don't know how to respond to her statement. What should I say.
