Jake quietly walked over to the bed and looked down at his wife. She's so beautiful, like an angel. A strong angel. I don't deserve her. She's way to good for me but I couldn't imagine life without her. He sat down next to her and ran his fingers through her hair. She moved a little, but kept sleeping. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. This time her eyes opened slowly and smiled.
She sat up straight and looked at him with panicked in her eyes. Lafitte growled and got between Jake and Sarah on the bed. "Where's the baby? Where's my baby?" Jake pushed him out of the way and put his hands on her shoulders. "Calm down, Sarah. Lucius has him. He's just fine." She calmed down immediately. "I'm sorry, Jake. I'm overreacting but please don't be upset with me." She hung her head. Jake lifted her chin and kissed her. "It's alright Sarah. I understand that you're going to be protective of him." She smiled and kissed him. She placed a hand on his cheek, "Ioce you Jake."
Sarah let herself relax. She wanted to get out of bed. She looked sheepishly at Jake, like a child that wanted to ask something but didn't know how. "Can you do something for me?" He looked at her and his face told her all she had to do was ask. "What do you want, Duchess?" She looked down at her lap and spoke quietly. "I want to get out of bed but I need help." He lifted her chin so she had to look at him. "Give me your hands." He held his hands out and she took them.
He had her turn so her feet were facing the edge of the bed. He slowly pulled her off of the bed. She sucked in a sharp breath. "Are you okay? Are you sure about this?" He had no idea what was going on with her. "I'm just sore, Jake and yes, I'm sure. I have been in bed all day." She wasn't going to stay in bed a minute longer.
He helped her stand the rest of the way and held her while she let her body adjust. "Okay, now I need a dress. I don't think Lucius wants to see me like this." She held out her arms, showing that she was, still in fact naked from that morning. Jake led her to her dresses. She took one that she knew would be loose, which was what she needed. The idea of something clinging to her body made her uncomfortable. Jake helped her put it on and pulled it down so that it wasn't bunched up at her waist.
Sarah sat and took her brush to her hair, that was an absolute mess. Satisfied with everything, she looked at Jake who was looking at her in amazement. She had just given birth less than twelve hours ago, and she was wanting to get out of bed and look her best. "You look surprised, husband." He walked closer to her. "I just can't believe that you want to get out of bed, get dressed and move around." He rubbed her shoulders, lovingly and kissed the top of her head.
"Well, I'm surprised myself. I felt I was going to die this morning as I was bringing our son into this world. But now, I'm wanting to get back to doing everything I did before." She stood but stumbled a bit. Thankfully, Jake was there to hold her. She smiled wearily. "I'm fine, I swear." He raised an eyebrow at her. "If you say so, Duchess." Sarah nodded and they headed for the ladder.
Jake went first, followed by Lafitte and then Sarah. She went slow and easy. She was starting to regret her decision but wasn't about to get back in bed. Jake grabbed her around the waist as she neared the bottom. As her feet touched the floor, he let her go. "Thank you, dear. Now, where's the baby?"
As if on cue, the baby started crying. Sarah and Lafitte rushed toward the sound coming from the kitchen. She had to step around a scared Rouser and came to find a terrified Lucius. He looked at her, panicked. "I'm sorry Sarah. He was just fine a second ago, now he's cryin'!" Sarah took the baby and started rocking him. He immediately calmed down to a low fuss. Lucius breathed a sigh of relief. "He musta wanted his mama." He chuckled. "You got a fine lookin' son there. Loud little fella."
Lafitte was trying to see the baby and kept standing on his hind legs. Jake walked over and grabbed his collar. "You can't be doing that fella." The dog looked up at him and whined. "I know you want to make sure he's okay, you just can't jump up like that." Sarah sat on a chair so Lafitte could see the baby. His tail started wagging and he licked the baby's head. Sarah scratched him on the head. "Good boy, Lafitte. You're just trying to be a good big brother." He licked her hand and laid down at her feet.
"Jake, can you please go find Rouser and bring him here?" Jake did as she asked and left the kitchen to find the young dog. Sarah turned to Lucius that was sitting across from her. "Don't be afraid when he cries, Lucius. He'll be doing that a lot." Lucius looked at her, embarrassed. "I know Miss Sarah, it's just that I don't have much experience with babies." He admitted. She placed a hand on his and smiled kindly. "Don't worry about it, Lucius. I want to ask you if you would be Little Matthew's grandfather."
