The First Step

“Let them fall in love first.” The call ended. The man inside the parked car lowered his phone slowly. His eyes remained fixed on the café across the street, where Ethan was still sitting alone. A faint smile appeared beneath the shadow of his hood. He had waited years for this moment. And now, fate had done half the work for him. He started the engine and disappeared into the night. --- The following morning, Ethan stared at the contract on his tiny kitchen table. He had barely slept. The words kept replaying in his mind. Lead Artist – Vaughn Foundation International Exhibition. Six months. A salary he could barely believe. International exposure. Everything he had been fighting for. And yet, one sentence bothered him more than everything else. Because I haven't stopped thinking about you since the day we met. Ethan rubbed his forehead. “Why does that man have to make everything complicated?” His phone suddenly rang. He looked at the screen. UNKNOWN NUMBER. He hesitated before answering. “Hello?” “Mr. Brooks?” “Yes.” “This is Vaughn Foundation. Mr. Vaughn would like to know your decision.” Ethan glanced at the contract. “I'll accept.” There was a brief pause. “Excellent. Someone will send a car for you at eight tomorrow morning.” “A car?” “Yes.” “I can take the bus.” “Mr. Vaughn specifically instructed us to pick you up.” Ethan sighed. “Of course he did.” The call ended. He looked around his tiny apartment. For the first time in months, the place didn't feel like a prison. Maybe this was his chance. Maybe accepting Alexander's offer wasn't a mistake. He just didn't know that the decision had already changed his life. --- At Vaughn Empire Tower, Alexander stood behind his desk while Noah reviewed the morning schedule. “The board meeting is at nine. The international investors arrive at eleven. Your mother wants you at dinner tonight.” “No.” Noah smiled. “She expected that answer.” Alexander glanced at him. “What else?” “Ethan Brooks starts tomorrow.” Alexander's expression changed slightly. “Good.” Noah noticed the tiny shift. “Sir?” “What?” “You're smiling.” Alexander immediately stopped. “I am not.” “You were.” “Get back to work, Noah.” Noah chuckled and left. Once the door closed, Alexander looked toward the city. He didn't understand what was happening to him. Ethan was different. He wasn't impressed by money. He wasn't intimidated by power. And somehow, that made Alexander want to know everything about him. But there was another reason Alexander couldn't shake the feeling that meeting Ethan wasn't an accident. He just didn't know what it was. --- The next morning, Ethan arrived at Vaughn Empire Tower wearing his best shirt. He stepped through the enormous glass entrance and immediately felt out of place. People in expensive suits moved around him. Assistants hurried through the lobby. Security guards stood near the elevators. Ethan looked down at his worn shoes. “Just act like you belong here.” “Mr. Brooks?” He turned. Noah Bennett approached him with a professional smile. “I'm Noah. Alexander's assistant.” “Nice to meet you.” Noah shook his hand. “Mr. Vaughn is expecting you.” “Of course he is.” Noah laughed. “You'll get used to him.” “I doubt that.” They entered the private elevator. As the doors closed, Noah glanced at Ethan. “Can I ask you something?” “Sure.” “Why did you reject his money?” Ethan frowned. “Because I don't want someone buying me.” Noah studied him for a moment. “Interesting.” “What?” “Nothing.” The elevator opened. Alexander was standing near the windows. He turned when they entered. His eyes immediately found Ethan. For a moment, neither spoke. Ethan couldn't explain why his heart suddenly beat faster. Alexander noticed. “You came.” “You told me to.” “I wasn't sure you would.” Ethan placed the contract on the desk. “I signed it.” Alexander picked it up. Their fingers briefly touched. Both men froze. It lasted only a second. But it was enough. Ethan quickly pulled his hand away. Alexander's gaze remained on him. “Welcome to Vaughn Foundation.” Ethan forced a smile. “Thank you.” Alexander gestured toward the office. “You'll have your own studio. Your assistant will meet you downstairs. Anything you need for the exhibition will be provided.” Ethan looked around. “And what exactly do you expect from me?” Alexander stepped closer. “Your best work.” “That's it?” “For now.” Ethan raised an eyebrow. “For now?” Alexander smiled faintly. “You'll learn that I don't reveal everything at once.” Ethan stared at him. “That's probably the most suspicious thing you've said so far.” Alexander's smile deepened. “Good.” --- Neither of them noticed the figure standing in the building opposite Vaughn Empire. A camera lens focused on the windows of Alexander's office. Click. Another photograph. Alexander and Ethan standing together. Click. The stranger lowered the camera. Then his phone vibrated. A message appeared. HOW CLOSE ARE THEY? He typed: Closer than expected. Another message appeared. Don't interfere yet. He smiled. I won't. Across the city, Alexander watched Ethan walk away with Noah. Something about him felt familiar. Not his face. Not his voice. Something deeper. Something Alexander couldn't name. And Ethan felt it too. Neither understood that every step they took toward each other was being carefully watched. Their attraction wasn't supposed to happen this quickly. But destiny had never followed anyone's plan. And somewhere in the shadows, someone was waiting patiently for the moment their love would become strong enough... to destroy them both.
