Chapter 16

816 Words
The night before the operation, the estate fell unusually quiet. Most of the household staff had been sent away for their own safety, while security had been tightened to a level Elena had never seen before. She found Dante in their bedroom, standing at the window and watching the dark grounds below with the particular stillness of a man running through every possible outcome of tomorrow. "You should sleep," she said, echoing his own words from weeks earlier. "I know." He didn't turn immediately. "I keep thinking about tomorrow. About every way this could go wrong." "It won't." She crossed the room and rested a hand against his back, grounding him the way he had grounded her so many times over the last few months. "We've planned this carefully. Both families are working together. Enzo's intelligence has been reliable every step of the way." "I know all of that." He finally turned to face her, something raw and unguarded in his expression that he rarely allowed himself to show, even now. "I still can't stop thinking about you standing anywhere near that facility tomorrow. About the baby. About every version of tomorrow where something goes wrong and I lose either of you." "You won't," she said softly, though she understood the fear too well to dismiss it entirely. "But I understand why you're afraid. I'm afraid too, Dante. I just refuse to let that fear make the decision for either of us." He pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers. They remained quiet for a long moment, the weight of tomorrow settling heavily between them despite the months of preparation. "If something happens to me," he said quietly, "I need you to survive. Whatever it takes. Our child needs at least one of us to make it through tomorrow." "Don't." She pulled back to look at him properly, something fierce entering her voice. "Don't talk like that. We're both walking away from this tomorrow. Together. I refuse to imagine any other outcome, and I need you to refuse it too." Something in his expression steadied at her certainty, drawing strength from it the way he so often did now. "Together," he agreed, quiet and resolved. "Both of us. Whatever it takes." They spent the rest of the evening simply together. There was no more strategy and no more contingency planning, just quiet closeness in the dark. Both of them memorized the feeling of the other's presence against the uncertainty waiting for them tomorrow. The call came at three in the morning, shattering whatever fragile peace they had found. "Sir." Marco's voice was tight with urgency. "We have a problem. Salazar's people hit one of our safe houses an hour ago. Small team, in and out fast. They didn't find anything. We'd already moved everything sensitive days ago. But it means he knows something's coming. He's moved up his own timeline." Dante was already moving, pulling on his clothes and instantly alert. "How much do we know?" "Enough to be worried. Our source inside his organization says he's planning to hit the estate directly tonight rather than wait for tomorrow's negotiation. He thinks he can end this before we're ready if he moves first." Elena was up too, dressing quickly, adrenaline sharpening every sense. "Then we're not waiting for him to arrive. We move now, while he's still organizing his own people. Catch him off guard the way he tried to catch us." Dante looked at her, quick calculation replacing panic. "The shipping facility. If we move there now, tonight, before he's fully mobilized..." "We control the terms instead of reacting to his," Elena finished. "Call my father. Call Enzo. We need everyone in position within the hour." Marco was already relaying orders through his earpiece, the estate transforming rapidly from quiet stillness into organized, purposeful motion. Within twenty minutes, a convoy of vehicles was moving through the dark city streets toward the water. Both families' most trusted people were converging on a location that, until an hour ago, had been intended as the site of a carefully staged trap rather than an urgent, improvised confrontation. "Are you ready for this?" Dante asked quietly as their car moved through the empty predawn streets, his hand finding hers in the darkness. Elena checked the weapon Marco had given her, the same steady, focused calm from the training range settling over her despite the circumstances. "I've been ready since the moment I found out what he tried to do to my uncle," she said, meeting Dante's eyes with fierce, unwavering resolve. "Let's finish this. Tonight." He squeezed her hand once, something proud, afraid, and entirely in love passing between them in the darkness. Both of them braced themselves for whatever waited at the water's edge. It was the final reckoning for everything Russo had built and everything Salazar was desperate enough to try to save from its ashes.
