Chapter 12

Enzo arrived at the estate before dawn, exhausted but triumphant. He carried a thick folder, which he placed on Dante's desk with visible relief. "It's enough," he said simply. "Financial records tying the shell companies directly to Russo's personal accounts. A witness statement from the man who supplied the accelerant used in the Hartwell Street fire. He's willing to testify now that Russo's grip on him has weakened enough for fear to outweigh loyalty. And phone records placing Russo near your father's location the night he died, despite his claimed alibi." Enzo exhaled tiredly. "It's enough for both families to see the truth clearly and act on it." Dante nodded, already reaching for his phone to arrange the meeting, when Elena, standing near the study door, suddenly went pale. "Elena?" She gripped the doorframe as the room tilted slightly. It was the same unsteady sensation she'd dismissed twice now as stress and too little sleep. "I'm fine," she managed, though her voice betrayed her. "I just need a minute." Dante crossed the room instantly, steadying her. The grim focus of a moment earlier was replaced by genuine alarm. "You're not fine. This is the third time this week." "It's nothing. Nerves, probably, after everything." "Elena." His voice was gentle but insistent. "Please. Let's have you checked. Today. Before we do anything else." She wanted to argue, mostly out of stubbornness, but something in his expression made her relent. There was genuine fear in his eyes, carefully restrained but impossible to miss. The doctor arrived within the hour, discreet and familiar with the particular privacy needs of a household like theirs. Elena sat on the edge of the bed afterward, staring at the small confirmation in her hands. Dante sat beside her, completely still. "I'm pregnant," she said quietly, testing the words as she continued to absorb the shock of them. For a long moment, Dante didn't speak at all. When she finally looked up at him, braced for she didn't know what, she found him already crying. The same composed, controlled man who had stood across from her during a boardroom negotiation just hours earlier was now completely undone by two small words. "We're having a baby," he said, his voice rough with disbelief. "We're having a baby," she confirmed. Something in her chest, tight with fear only moments earlier, loosened into something warmer, more terrifying, and entirely new. He pulled her close, careful and reverent, both of them laughing through unexpected tears. But the warmth of the moment didn't last long. The reality of their situation settled back over them, heavier now than it had been an hour earlier. "Russo," Elena said quietly, the name landing like a stone in the room. "Dante, if he finds out about this before we've exposed him..." "He won't." Dante's arms tightened around her, his protective instinct sharpening instantly into something fierce. "We move today. Now. Before this changes anything for him strategically. A pregnancy makes you more valuable to him as leverage, not less. I'm not giving him a single extra hour to consider that." "You don't think this changes things? Making this fight even more dangerous?" "It changes everything," he admitted, quiet and certain. "It means I'm not just protecting you anymore. It means I have two people to protect now, and I intend to end this threat completely before either of you is in danger for one moment longer than necessary." Elena rested a hand over her still flat stomach, old fear and fierce new protectiveness tangling together. "Then let's finish it. Today. I want our child to grow up in a world where this man doesn't exist as a threat anymore." "Today," Dante agreed, standing as his resolve hardened into something unshakeable. "Both families. All the evidence. No more waiting." The meeting was arranged for that afternoon in neutral territory. Both families' senior members were summoned under the pretense of an urgent matter. Russo was informed only that his presence was required, with no reason to suspect what awaited him. Elena's father arrived first, tense and visibly unsettled. Dante's senior lieutenants followed. Russo arrived last, composed as ever. However, something shifted in his expression the moment he saw the folder on the table and the unified, grim front Dante and Elena presented. Elena's hand rested unconsciously over her stomach in a protective gesture. "What is this?" Russo asked carefully. "Sit down," Dante said, his voice level despite the fury beneath it. "We have something to discuss, and we don't have all day." What followed was methodical and devastating. Enzo laid out the evidence piece by piece, including the financial trails, the witness testimony, and the suspicious timing surrounding Dante's father's death. Elena's father grew progressively paler as old grief and fresh fury warred across his face. "You," he said finally, his voice shaking as he stared at Russo. "You let me believe the Castelianos killed my brother. For a decade." "This is absurd," Russo said, his composure beginning to fray. Sweat beaded along his hairline. "Circumstantial nonsense." "The witness," Dante interrupted mercilessly, "is prepared to testify about exactly who hired him and when. Should we call him in, or would you prefer to keep insisting this is circumstantial?" Russo's composure finally broke completely. "Everything I did, I did to protect this family. Your father was weak, Dante." "You murdered my uncle," Elena said, fury shaking her voice. One hand remained protectively over her stomach. "You built your entire empire on other people's grief, and you were prepared to do it again to my child if it served your purpose." Something in Russo's expression flickered at that. Genuine surprise appeared for the briefest moment before it was quickly buried. "Your child," he repeated. Even now, he was calculating. Dante's jaw tightened at the sight of him instinctively recalculating what that information might be worth. "Which is exactly why this ends today," Dante said, standing. His voice was hard as iron. "Take him." Security moved in from the edges of the room. Within minutes, the man who had orchestrated a decade of grief for both families was being led away, his composure finally and completely shattered. Yet the calculating flicker in his eyes at the mention of the pregnancy lingered uneasily in both Dante and Elena's minds long after he was gone. "It's over," Elena said quietly, though something in her voice suggested she didn't entirely believe it yet. "Russo's finished," Dante said carefully, pulling her close. One hand rested protectively over her stomach alongside her own. "But he built alliances over twenty years, Elena. Loyalists who've profited from the exact chaos he engineered. And now they know about the baby too." His jaw tightened. "I don't think this ends as cleanly as we'd like it to."
