“You are native to Natal?” “Born and bred,” Elaine told him with more than a hint of pride. Andrew looked ahead, where the mountain of Quanyana presented a formidable obstacle. He knew the rest of the day would be challenging, and the Amapondos were still there, watching without approaching. Andrew helped guide the leading oxen over a rough piece of track. “Is it not dangerous living close to Zululand?” Elaine shook her head. “No more dangerous than anywhere else and less dangerous than the Cape frontier. From the stoep of our house, we can see across the Tugela into Zululand, and the herd boys water their cattle opposite our land. The Zulus have never given us any trouble.” Andrew raised his eyebrows. “People have told me the Zulus are Africa’s most aggressive and dangerous nation.”
