CHAPTER 11:
The room was quiet. Too quiet. It was like nothing had just happened. Like a man hadn’t just tried to take me and left with a threat.
I sat on the bed with my fingers clenched in the sheets. My heart was still racing. It hadn't slowed down. Not even a little.
Ethan said my name, "Amara." His voice was soft and careful. Like I might break if he spoke loudly.
I didn't answer. My mind was still stuck on what had happened. "Hes going to use your past " Ethan had said. I asked him what that meant. My voice was barely steady.
Ethan took a breath. "It means Kieran knows something about you that you don't " he said. I laughed. It was a bitter laugh. "That's not surprising, " I said. "Everyone seems to know everything about me except me."
Ethan's face tightened a little. "I'm trying to change that, " he said. I looked up at him. "Then tell me, " I said. "All of it. No half-truths."
There was silence. Ethan hesitated. Again. It was starting to feel like he was hiding something from me. Like he was betraying me.
"Ethan " I said, my voice firmer now. "If you don't tell me the truth then you're no different from him." He looked at me. I saw something in his eyes. Guilt, maybe.. Conflict.
Then he nodded slowly. "Okay " he said. "You deserve to know." My chest felt tight. Finally I was going to get some answers.
"The night of your accident..." he started to say. "You weren't just running." I leaned forward a little. "Running from what?" I asked.
"From them, " he said. "Blackwood." My breath caught. "They were after me?" I asked. "Yes, " he said. "Why?" I asked.
He hesitated again.. This time he didn't stop. "Because you had something they wanted back, " he said. My heart skipped a beat. "What did I have?" I asked.
Ethan's jaw tightened. "Information, " he said. The word echoed in my mind. I saw a flash of something. A screen, files, names, numbers. My hands typing quickly. My breath hitched.
"I saw something, " I whispered. Ethan's eyes sharpened. "What did you see?" he asked.
"I don't know, " I said, pressing my fingers to my temple. ". I was working on something. Searching." Ethan confirmed it. "You were, " he said.
"For what?" I asked. "For proof, " he said. A chill ran through me. "Proof of what?" I asked.
"That Blackwood isn't an organization " he said quietly. "It's a system." My stomach twisted. "What does that mean?" I asked.
"It means they don't just control people, " Ethan continued. "They control identities. Records. Lives." My pulse was racing. "Like erasing people?" I asked.
"Yes, " he said. The word landed heavily.. Suddenly everything started making sense. The missing memories. The gaps. The fear.
"They did that to me, " I said slowly. Ethan didn't deny it. "They tried, " he said. My chest felt tight and painful. "Why me?" I asked.
"Because you were close to exposing them, " he said. The room felt smaller and colder. "You mean I was trying to take them down?" I asked.
Ethan said yes. A strange mix of fear and something else filled me. Something familiar. Like a part of me recognized that version of myself. The one who wasn't afraid. The one who fought back.
"That doesn't sound like me " I said. Ethan's gaze softened. "It is you, " he said. "You just don't remember her yet."
We were silent for a moment.. This time it wasn't empty. It was heavy with truth. "And Kieran?" I asked after a moment.
Ethan's expression darkened. "He knew, " he said. My breath caught. "He knew I was investigating Blackwood?" I asked.
Ethan said yes. ". He didn't stop me?" I asked. Ethan didn't answer immediately. That silence said everything.
"What did he do?" I pressed. Ethan said, "He tried to control it." "Control what?" I asked.
"You, " he said. My heart dropped. "He thought if he kept you close, if he watched you he could protect you." Protect me? That didn't sound like protection. That sounded like control.
Something inside me twisted. Pain. Anger. Confusion. "All this time " I whispered. "I thought he was someone I didn't remember."
"He's more than that " Ethan said. "Yeah " I murmured. "That's the problem."
We were silent again.. This time it didn't last long. Because suddenly a sharp pain shot through my head. I gasped. My body tensed instantly.
"Amara?" Ethan stepped closer. "I'm fine " I tried to say.. I wasn't. The pain intensified. Sharp. Blinding.
Memories hit me all once. Fast. Overlapping. Chaotic. A voice. "You're getting too close." Another. "If they find out you're dead." Footsteps. Running. My heart racing. Rain pouring down. A car. Bright headlights. Impact.
I screamed. My body jerked forward as the memory crashed into me fully. "Amara!" Ethan caught me before I fell.
I clutched his arm tightly gasping for air. "I remember, " I whispered. "What?" he asked urgently.
"The accident " I said, my voice shaking. "It wasn't random." Ethan's grip tightened slightly. "What happened?" he asked.
"I was running, " I said. "Someone was chasing me." "Who?" he asked.
"I don't know, " I replied. "I didn't see their face." My chest. Fell rapidly. "But I wasn't alone, " I added.
Ethan frowned. "What do you mean?" he asked. "There was someone with me " I said slowly.
His expression changed. Sharp. Focused. "Who?" he asked.
"I don't know " I said again frustrated. ". I wasn't alone." That detail felt important. Very important.
"Try to remember, " Ethan urged gently. I closed my eyes. Focused. Pushed past the pain.. Then. Another flash. A voice. Close. Urgent. "You have to go."
My eyes snapped open. "You " I said suddenly. Ethan froze. "What?" he asked.
"It was you " I whispered. "The night of the accident. You were with me." Silence. Heavy. Tense.
Realization hit me like a wave. "You didn't just 'find' me did you?" I asked slowly. Ethan didn't answer. My heart started pounding
"You were already there " I said. Ethan looked at me. Really looked at me.. This time. He didn't look calm. He looked caught.
"Yes " he said quietly. The word felt like a punch to the chest. "You were there?" I repeated.
"Yes " he said. "Why?" I demanded. He hesitated. Then. "Because I was helping you."
Helping me? "Helping me do what?" I asked.
His eyes darkened. "Bring them down " he said. My breath caught. "You were involved in this too?" I asked.
Ethan said yes. My mind spun. "You've been lying to me this time " I said.
"No " he said quickly. "Not lying. Just not telling everything." That's the thing I thought.
"That's the thing!" I snapped. Ethan said, "Amara. "
"No!" I pulled back slightly. "You knew. You knew everything. You just watched me struggle!" I said.
"I was trying to protect you " he said. The same words. The same excuse. Just like Kieran.
Something, inside me shifted. Cracked. "How am I supposed to trust you?" I asked.
Ethan's expression softened.
He said to me "I never tried to control you."
Silence.
The words he said stayed with me.
Even though I did not like it
There was truth in the words he said.
Still I was not sure.
I whispered to him "You should have told me."
He said quietly "I know."
The room was silent again.
It felt heavy and uncertain.
Before we could say anything else
A loud noise came from the hallway.
We both turned to the door away.
I heard voices. Shouting and running.
My heart started beating again.
I whispered, "What "
Ethan went to the door carefully.
He. Then his face changed.
It looked dark and serious.
I asked him "What is it?"
He turned to me. The look, in his eyes scared me.
He said, "They are not coming for you this time."
My chest felt tight.
I asked him "What do you mean?"
His voice was low.
He said, "They are clearing the floor."
I felt fear.
I asked him "Why?"
Ethan looked at me sharply.
He said s
lowly "Because they do not want anyone to see what they will do when they come back."
I could not breathe.
Just like that
I knew this was not the end.
It was the start.
