CHAPTER 19:
Everything was dark.
For a moment there was no movement. No sound. I just heard that voice. It was cold and certain. It was waiting.
Someone said, "Well done, Amara."
My heart was pounding against my chest. The man in black was there. He was watching or maybe both.
Ethan whispered to me "Stay close." His hand found mine in the dark. It was firm and grounding.. My mind was already racing. Something did not add up.
This place was supposed to be hidden and untouched. Kieran said it was off-grid. So how did they find us?
Then the voice said, "Lights,". They came back on. They were dim and red. We did not control them. The system belonged to them now.
There were figures stepping out from the shadows. They were armed and silent. They surrounded us and my pulse spiked.
The man in black said, "Drop anything you're holding." He was calm and composed like he had already won.
Ethan tensed beside me. Kieran did not move. He did not speak. He did not react.. That was when I felt it. The shift. It was subtle. It was real.
My gaze slid toward Kieran slowly. He was too calm and too still like he expected this.
I whispered, "Don't." Ethan glanced at me. Asked, "What?". I was not looking at him. I was looking at Kieran.
I said quietly "Tell me I'm wrong." There was silence. It was heavy and thick and dangerous.
Kieran finally turned his head slightly. Met my gaze.. In his eyes there was no surprise, no panic, no anger. Just acceptance.
My stomach. I breathed, "No..." Ethan stiffened instantly. Demanded, "What is she talking about?"
Kieran did not answer him. He only looked at me. Said, "I needed them to come out."
The words hit me like a punch. I said, "You used me." He replied, "I aligned with you."
I said, "That's not the thing!" He said, "It is. You wanted war."
My chest burned with anger. I snapped, "This isn't war. This is betrayal."
The man in black chuckled softly. Said, "Oh this is better than I expected."
I ignored him. Focused on Kieran. I said, "You brought me here. You knew they'd be waiting."
He said, "Yes" to both questions. Each answer landed harder than the last.
Ethan stepped forward. Growled, "You set us up?" Kieran corrected him "I set this up."
My heart pounded and I demanded, "Why?"
Kieran said, "Because this is the way to end it."
The words did not make sense, not fully. I asked, "What are you talking about?"
Kieran stepped forward closer to me. Said, "You don't win against Blackwood by running. You don't win by hiding. You win by forcing them into the open."
My breath caught. I said slowly "You used my plan." He said, "Yes, but not the way you intended. Better."
Rage. I gestured around us. "You call this better? We're surrounded!"
Kieran said, "Exactly."
Then understanding flickered, small and dangerous. I asked quietly "What did you do?"
Kieran's gaze held mine. He said, "I gave them something they couldn't resist."
The man in black said, "You."
My heart. I asked, "And in return?"
Kieran's jaw tightened slightly. He said, "In return... I got access."
The words hit hard. Ethan demanded, "Access to what?"
Kieran did not look at him. Said, "Everything."
There was silence, impossible. I whispered, "What did you just say?"
Kieran stepped closer and lowered his voice slightly. ". Did you. You wanted their system. You wanted a way in."
Realization hit me like lightning. I said, "You used them to open the door."
Kieran said, "Yes.. Now we burn it down."
The room seemed to freeze. The man in black's expression shifted. Something darker, something alert.
He asked, "What game are you playing?"
Kieran finally turned to face him. For the first time there was no calm, no mask. Just something raw something
He said, "The one where you lose."
The air changed, tension. The man demanded, "What did you do?"
Kieran smiled, cold. Said, "Check your system."
One of the guards hesitated, reached for a device and typed quickly. His face changed instantly. He said, "Sir"
But it was too late. The lights flickered again. This time they were not controlled. They were glitching, breaking. Alarms exploded through the room, different from before, louder and wilder uncontained.
The man shouted, "What did you do?!"
Kieran stepped back toward me, toward Ethan. Said, "Gave her exactly what she needed."
My heart. I asked him "What did you do?"
He looked at me and for the first time, there was something real in his eyes. Trust.
He said, "I got you inside. You have access now."
The words hit deep, hard and clear. I turned toward the system, the screens and they were lighting up responding to me to my presence to my code.
I whispered, "They're open." Kieran said, "Yes."
Ethan stared between us. Asked, "You planned this?"
Kieran did not answer because he did not need to. The truth was already there.
I stepped forward slowly toward the console ignoring the chaos, the shouting, the panic. Because this was the moment, the one I almost died for, the one I lost everything for, the one I came back for.
My fingers hovered over the controls then I smiled, cold, certain and for the first time completely in control.
I said softly "You wanted me to choose?"
The man in black glared at me with rage burning in his eyes.
I continued, "Well I choose destruction."
I pressed enter.
