I don’t leave the library until after midnight. When I head for the exit, Luca half-sprints after me, carrying a brown paper bag and hands it to me. I stare down at it. “What’s this?” “Mooched some more cookies from Dibella,” he winks. “You’re welcome.” I sigh, lowering the bag beside me. “Thanks. But you need to chill with the cookies. The other assistants are going to have my neck.” “Not unless—” Luca pauses just as the two assistants from earlier approach the exit, their faces tight with scowls. A grin spreads across his face as he lifts two more paper bags, handing them over. “Got you guys some chocolate chip ones. Freshly baked.” They freeze, blinking in disbelief, before each hesitantly accepts a bag from Luca. Their eyes remain fixed on him, searching his face for the punchline
