Hailey’s mom frowns. “You think that girl will follow through?” “Yes. It looks like she hates her enough,” Hailey’s dad says with a sneer. My mind races. She hates her enough? What—or who, rather, are they talking about? “Good,” Hailey’s mom says, her voice softening. She sounds relieved now, lighter somehow. “It’ll be worth it. This place is disgusting anyway. Bunch of filthy animals.” Hailey’s dad scoffs. “No argument there. Still, I’d rather not have come here at all, but…” “But we need the cash,” Hailey’s mom finishes bitterly. “You know we do. And this is our best shot at getting it quickly.” I feel like I’m going to be sick. They’re talking about Hailey—like she’s nothing. Just a tool in their little scheme.
