In Zoe's original apocalyptic world, human cities had fallen to zombies. Stepping outside meant coming face-to-face with the undead.
Fang Ying's expression was intriguing; she hadn't expected Zoe's fearless response. A newcomer so bold?
Fang Ying prepared to explain the nature of monsters with videos and data, expecting Zoe to react with fear or confusion. But Zoe discussed monsters as casually as one might talk about a common vegetable.
Fang Ying, momentarily silent, continued with her questions. "Are you afraid of corpses?"
"Not particularly," Zoe replied conservatively. She had seen many corpses – human, zombie, and others – and was as unfazed by them as by streetlights.
Recognizing Zoe's bravery, Fang Ying approved her readiness to work.
Zoe was surprised at the simplicity. "That's it?"
Fang Ying elaborated, "Our work isn't technically difficult. The main requirement is courage, the ability to handle gore, high stress tolerance, and good mental health."
"So, it’s like collecting corpses?" Zoe asked.
"You could say that. You'll be cleaning up after incidents," Fang Ying confirmed.
Understanding the role, Zoe found it straightforward. She inquired about the high pay.
"Not many fit the profile," Fang Ying explained. "The longest-serving employee lasted only eight and a half years, many quit after three months."
"Why?" Zoe asked.
"It can drive people insane," Fang Ying admitted. "We monitor health closely and provide medical care and pensions after leaving."
Fang Ying then explained the trial period's purpose and handed Zoe a contract stressing the job's confidentiality.
"There's danger?" Zoe asked, noting the contract's terms.
"Some, but it's rare," Fang Ying assured her.
Zoe signed the contract, ready for the task.
Her training was thorough yet quick. The 'uniform' resembled a motorbike suit, complete with a helmet that inflated for protection.
Her first task was in the A7 sewer. The team, led by Captain Max , included Zoe and Specialist Leo . Max handed Zoe a self-defense gun and a cleaning backpack with necessary tools.
Descending into the sewer, Zoe was prepared yet still shocked by the reality. Despite her experiences, the scene was more bizarre and daunting than she could have imagined.
